Vinesh Phogat: A Champion Betrayed Vinesh Phogat is not just an athlete; she’s a symbol of resilience. Two ACL surgeries, Olympic heartbreaks, brutal weight cuts, and an unwavering fight for women's rights have defined her journey. Yet, she was cruelly denied her chance to shine on the biggest stage. Disqualified for allegedly missing weight, mere hours after a grueling match, is a blatant disregard for the complexities of the female body. The absurd measures her team resorted to – from sleepless nights to desperate hair cuts – expose the archaic rules that govern women's sports. This isn't about weight; it's about understanding the biological realities of women. Post-match inflammation, hormonal fluctuations, and the stress of competition are factors ignored at our peril. We demand standards that respect the 28-day cycle that defines women's lives, not the arbitrary 24-hour clock that governs men's world. From workplaces to warzones, the male body is the standard. It's time to change that. Vinesh's disqualification is more than a personal tragedy; it's a collective failure. 🌍 Exciting news in the world of animal health and biosecurity! The World Animal Biosecurity Association (WABA) has just held its first council meeting, marking the beginning of an important journey. WABA’s mission is to become a recognized reference on animal biosecurity, advancing the science and practice of infectious disease prevention and control. Our ultimate goal is to enhance sustainable animal, environmental, and public health worldwide. As of today WABA has 846 members across 95 countries, a testament to the global need for collaboration on this critical issue. Our key aims are: 1️⃣ Providing a global forum dedicated to animal biosecurity. 2️⃣ Facilitating the sharing of information, practices, and collaborative projects among members. 3️⃣ Informing international standards on biosecurity matters. 4️⃣ Serving as a repository of biosecurity information, including research and training program funding. 5️⃣ Developing and transferring biosecurity knowledge. 6️⃣ Informing stakeholders—growers, the public, and decision-makers—about biosecurity advancements. Although we are still in the early stages, we are optimistic about making significant progress toward becoming a registered international association, improving our communication channels, and building partnerships with sponsors. I am honored to have been elected as Council Member for Oceania, and I look forward to contributing to WABA’s vision and initiatives. Biosecurity is not only essential in laboratory settings, but it also extends to animal settings. Although the practices and principles differ, but with the one health approach to #biosecurity, emphasis is drawn on the need for collaborative and multidisciplinary effort to #prevent, #detect, and #respond to biosecurity threats. It is pertinent to ensure that stakeholders respond to biosecurity threats irrespective of which setting it applies. It is a great privilege to be elected along side with Christopher Brandt as council members of World Animal Biosecurity Association (WABA) to represent #Africa.
