Did you know that over 80% of the ocean remains unexplored? Professor Cedric John collaborated with colleagues in Sydney to unlock some of the mysteries of the deep sea. Their research, published in Nature Scientific Data, focuses on using AI to identify and classify deep-sea organisms. The team developed a new dataset of deep-sea biota images captured by Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) – a first-of-its-kind resource! Why this research is significant: ‣ This dataset allows for the training of deep learning models to automatically classify deep-sea organisms. ‣ The models can then be used to create detailed habitat maps, aiding in biodiversity assessments and monitoring ecosystem health. ‣ This research advances data-driven approaches to deep-sea conservation efforts. Professor John comments: "Having a significant source of labelled data is crucial for training robust deep learning models. This is the first time such a dataset and models for deep-sea biota classification have been put together. It's a significant contribution to marine conservation efforts." CORAL REEF NEWS: A new AI tool to help monitor coral reef health Emerging research demonstrates how ecoacoustics — that is, the natural sounds that characterize an ecosystem – can help to gain a better understanding of reef health. Over the past year we asked people from around the world to participate in “Calling in our Corals” — a project created in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture that invites the public to listen to reef audio recordings to build a bioacoustic data library on the health of reefs. Today we're taking a further step and introducing a new AI-powered tool called SurfPerch created with Google Research and DeepMind that can be applied to automatically process thousands of hours of audio to build new understanding of coral reef ecosystems. Today is Earth Day 🌎, and it’s only fitting to share our UC Berkeley School of Information Capstone project, OceanWatch, to the public. Do you know that every year, approximately 5,000 tons of oil spilled into our oceans? These incidents often impact marine protected areas, which are vital for conserving rare habitats and species. While some satellite imagery based solutions do exist, they are often costly, time consuming, and labor intensive. Such service is just simply not affordable to less wealthy countries. OceanWatch provides a swift, accurate, and cost effective solution combining satellite imagery 🛰️ and advanced AI techniques. Take a look at our solution and see how we are protecting our oceans 🌊. https://lnkd.in/gHqFiGnS Sameer “Sam” Shinde, KT N., Snithika Reddy Kalakoti, Ranadip Acharya #OceanWatch #earthday #computervision #AI #MIDS
