The possibility of a rail strike in Canada has cast a shadow over the logistics industry since it was postponed in May. Our VP of Global Supply Chain Paul Brashier spoke with Supply Chain Dive on how the shipping industry has prepared during the postponement. “The best operational plan to avoid these challenges is to terminate imports at the port of entry and use dray off, transload, and one-way trucking to get freight into DC networks,” Brashier said. “It is a very fluid situation and we continue to monitor daily until a resolution is reached.” Read the full article here: https://hubs.li/Q02HRbZV0 #supplychain #supplychainews #canada #rail #intermodal

Large shippers are keeping inventory high, fearing a Canadian rail strike could come sooner than expected and would likely be an ‘all or nothing scenario’. CN and CPKC have both suggested continuation of only ‘essential services’ would be more damaging than a complete shutdown in documents sent to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board. The rail operators and Teamsters Canada argued that rail services should not be deemed essential. The CIRB has now directed stakeholders to provide final replies by 14 June, which could mean a CIRB decision, and possibly a strike, by the end of the month.... Both lockouts and a rail strike are expected to halt freight movement across Canada's rail networks starting Thursday (Aug. 22). These disruptions would burden cross-border trade between the U.S. and Canada. Canada's two Class I railroads and Canada's Teamsters union (representing railroad employees/workers) have been at a prolonged impasse over new collective bargaining agreements. Over the weekend, the railways notified their intentions of locking unionized employees out starting Thursday, while Teamsters followed shortly with its own notice, a warning of a nationwide strike which will also begin on Thursday. Commerce Express Inc. continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates to customers this situation applies to. Commerce Express' team is available to discuss this further. If you thought the Canadian rail strike wouldn't impact you, you're probably wrong! Shippers are now scrambling and discovering few alternatives as freight movement has shutdown on Canadian railways. If the strike drags on, expect major supply chain and shipping disruptions across North America. Carriers are already re-routing ships from Vancouver to already-busy US West Coast ports. But union port workers may elect not to handle the Canadian freight in support of the railway union workers.
