Life of a Software Engineer vs. Life of a Farmer: A Personal Reflection As someone who has navigated the realms of both technology and agriculture, I’ve experienced the unique challenges and rewards of each path. Here’s a side-by-side comparison: Conclusion: Both careers have their unique demands and rewards. As a software engineer, I appreciate the mental challenge and the ability to create innovative solutions. As a farmer, I value the physical engagement, connection to the land, and the tangible results of hard work. Each role has taught me invaluable lessons—patience, resilience, and the importance of adapting to change. Whether coding or cultivating, dedication and passion are key to thriving in both worlds. #TechVsNature #WorkLifeBalance #RuralLife #TechIndustry #Agriculture #SustainableLiving #Innovation #HardWork #PersonalReflection #SoftwareEngineering #FarmingLife #CareerComparison #TechAndNature #PersonalGrowth #dataanalyst

I’ve been asked countless times what I do as a software engineer. For a long time, my go-to answer was, “I write code.” Simple, right? But the truth is, that’s only part of the story. Over the years, I’ve realized that being a software engineer isn’t just about the lines of code—it’s about crafting the future of business. It’s where strategy meets execution. Code is more than syntax; it’s an asset that can either propel a company forward or drag it down. Bad code eventually becomes bad business. Scalable code eventually yields scalable business. That’s how companies grow. At BuildWitt we’re on a mission to do more than just disrupt the construction industry—we’re rewriting its story. And to do that, we need tech that’s as transformative as our vision. Because in a business as bold as ours, the tools we build become the engines of change. We’re not just solving problems—we’re reshaping an industry, one solution at a time. And that’s where the magic of engineering truly lies.

Software engineers who don't understand the business are ineffective software engineers. Product managers who don't understand the tech are ineffective product managers. Applied scientists who don't understand the production tech are ineffective data scientists. Each of these roles demands specialization and technical knowledge, but too often, people get overly attached to job titles and forget they're working together to ship products. Interdisciplinary skills and collaboration are crucial for effective communication and problem-solving. In product development, design and implementation decisions must directly solve customer problems. Trade-offs on costs and implementation approaches are inevitable, especially as your solution moves into a production environment. Success depends on understanding these dynamics and effectively collaborating to deliver great products. Going beyond your job description is a good way to ensure you are getting things done, and honestly, a much more fun and enriching way of working.

Health tech product manager role. Why aren’t you getting more product manager interviews? There’s a pattern here folks of the types of roles hiring managers are positing for. I have been posting product manager roles nonstop and figured out one of the reasons you are not getting interviews is that your resume may not (MAY NOT) be tailored for the role, because you “think” you don’t have direct experience. These are the most commonly posted product manager roles and also the industries that are thriving. Digital payments Healthcare or Health Tech E-commerce Data Privacy and/or Cybersecurity Growth AI Product Strategy and Roadmap Recently Funded Startup of First PM Hire (💰💰💰) Automotive Product Leader (ie head or director of product) I have a resume template for each type of product manager role in Skool! https://lnkd.in/gtQjCfUH See you in Skool for the resume templates. https://lnkd.in/gtQjCfUH PS Are you curious how my team is able to get to these roles as fast as we do? Is leading a bunch of talented and passionate data scientists, machine learning engineers and software engineers as difficult as herding cats (and dogs)? nPlan’s Julieta Suarez Ruiz de Huidobro would know… In the last of our (current) series on the ‘humans of nPlan’, we’re introducing you to our incredibly energetic VP of Engineering. Brace yourselves 👇 Q: What do you do? ▶ As the VP of Engineering I look after our data science, machine learning and software engineers. That means making sure they are ok, and have all the tools they need to perform at their best, while also defining the processes and structures that will better unlock their potential. Q: What made you decide to join nPlan? ▶ I was attracted to the idea of working with very clever people solving a problem others thought was impossible. I quite like a good challenge. Throughout my interview process everyone was very nice, and for me, culture in a business is everything. Q: What do you love most about working at nPlan? ▶ How open we are to new ideas and changes. As I have a tech background that is almost second nature for me, and being able to work with a team where everyone else also enjoys it is a nice feeling! Q: When you’re not hard at work at nPlan, what do you like to do? ▶ I have 3 dogs and a cat, which yes, takes quite a bit of time! I enjoy cooking and baking (the dogs and cat also enjoy that - as they know there are usually treats involved), hiking, reading, gardening, the list is probably too long to put everything here! Recently I’ve also been quite busy planning my wedding. Have I already mentioned that I like doing lots of things, and hardly ever stay still? More on careers at nPlan 👉 https://lnkd.in/gtCNUEj

🚫 I am NOT advocating for #Devin to replace human software engineers First and foremost, let’s clarify something – Devin is not a software engineer. It's an assistant designed to enhance the development process, not take over our roles. Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions about job security, let’s dive into why #SoftwareEngineers should actually embrace this. We’re all too familiar with the challenges of software engineering: >The sleepless nights spent troubleshooting >The endless quest for solutions online >The manual labor involved in squashing bugs It’s grueling work, no doubt about it. But with Devin as our assistant, we can offload much of this manual labor. Here's the kicker: with Devin’s support, we can potentially double our #software output in half the time! Imagine what used to take a month can now be achieved in just a couple of weeks. 📈 More software means increased productivity and profitability. It's a win-win scenario! Now, let’s address the concern that Devin might replace us. Rest assured, Devin is an invaluable “assistant”, but it lacks the expertise and creativity of skilled software engineers. Devin complements our work, it doesn’t replace it! Let's face it – Devin's IDE is still a work in progress, nowhere near as intuitive as a seasoned software engineer’s toolkit. 💡 I’m talking about the “savvy” software engineers here, not those who rely on shortcuts and copy-pasting. Sure, those who cut corners might feel the pressure, but the true experts❓ They’re indispensable. Think about it: could Devin truly replace a team of dedicated engineers crafting a complex #healthcare software over two years? Absolutely not ❌ Devin is simply a powerful #tool. It's not equipped to shoulder the full burden of #SoftwareDevelopment solo. So, let’s welcome Devin as our ally in innovation, not a threat to our expertise. Together, we can achieve extraordinary things! #TechInnovation #SoftwareEngineering #AIAssistant #LinkedInThoughts 🚀👩💻👨💻

Head of Engineering AND Aspiring Chessmaster @ AND Digital (Ex Booking.com | BBC Sport & Childrens | The Hut Group)
When you look for a new Software Engineer role do you look for “greenfield projects” in the job specification? Some of the times where I made the greatest leaps in my programming career was when looking after really complex (sometimes subtle genius) messy codebases. Refactoring “God Controllers” (my term for controllers that have everything stuffed into them) and unpicking giant tarballs of mess is not just satisfying when you’re done, it’s also going to mean that you can have a better understanding of less complex codebases faster. So when someone asks you to go work on a legacy (crustacean) codebase (ok ok so most code is technically legacy after it’s released after beta I suppose) see it as an opportunity to really level up your technical skills. Because when you come back to writing those Greenfield microservice/serverless applications. It’ll be a lot easier to understand than the monolithic giant ball of mess you previously looked after. #legacycode #softwareengineering #microservices #monoliths #refactoring #monoliths
