Today, on National HIV and Aging Awareness Day, we reflect on research presented by Alexandra M. Bonnet, LMSW, and Dr. Rodolfo R. Vega, PhD with Waves Ahead at #2023USCHA. They shared that despite higher than average education and medical insurance coverage and little to no language barrier or discrimination, 264 older LGBTQ+ survey participants living with #HIV in #PuertoRico face steep gaps in other quality of life indicators, including - unmet medical needs ranging from mental health services, breast and prostate exams, pap smears, oncology, physical disability care, and gender-affirming care; - almost half living off of less than $15,000 a year; and - 1 in 5 people live in unstable housing. As people age, their social conditions, bodies, and needs change, and their services should change with them. February is LGBT+ History Month and this year's theme celebrates the LGBT+ community's contributions to the field of #Medicine. 🌈🔬 Arguably one of the community's biggest impacts was in the development of modern #PatientAdvocacy, a topic we discussed with Neil Bertelsen as he relayed the story of how HIV patients shaped a whole new approach to patient/regulator engagement. "What happened in those last years of the 1980s was something that we hadn’t seen before: a genuine coming together of both the medical community and the patient community, where we became hand-in-glove, basically learning at the same speed." Our recent short report in Sexual Health (with my lovely co-authors Drs. Mance Buttram and Matthew S. Ellis, PhD, MPE) found that individuals living in states with lower LGBTQ equality in the US were significantly less likely to be aware of #doxyPEP – an important evidence-based biomedical strategy that is effective at preventing bacterial STIs, particularly syphilis and chlamydia, among gay and bisexual men and trans women. (Full article: https://lnkd.in/g5GZuW8Z) Inequities find a way creeping in when there are exciting new advances afoot. An understanding of how social determinants of health structure the implementation of interventions is crucial. This has been clearly seen with HIV PrEP. We need more research focused on how social determinants of health impact the uptake of novel biomedical advances, with a distinct focus on equity and communities who are disproportionately impacted. Let's work to ensure that everyone who can benefit from #doxyPEP knows that it exists, how it works and has access to it. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have proposed a series of dangerous cuts to the federal budget. Specifically, the House Labor-HHS Subcommittee's draft FY 25 budget bill proposes the following cuts: -$190 million from Ryan White, -$214 million from CDC prevention funds, and -$15 million from the Minority HIV/AIDS Fund. As AIDS United has noted, we can't end the HIV epidemic with less resources. “REMEMBER AND COMMIT” is the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day which marks the 35th remembrance of this event to serve as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat. “HIV disproportionately affects members of the LGBTQ+ communities of color, particularly cisgender Black and Latino gay and bisexual, transgender women, and Black women.” “While HIV diagnoses decreased overall and among white men who have sex with men between 2009 and 2018, new cases remained stable among Black/African-American men who have sex with men and increased among young people aged 25-34 and Latino men who have sex with men. While Blacks/African Americans make up only about 13% of the U.S. population, we accounted for 43% of HIV-related deaths in 2018.” As a result, “Researchers suggest that culturally appropriate, tailored interventions may help communities respond to the unique needs of people in—or at the intersections of—these groups.” #healthequitynow #worldaidsday #communityhealth #survivingourblackness #

Grindr accused of selling users' data on their HIV status 🛑 The world's biggest dating app for the LGBT community is allegedly sharing users' highly sensitive information for commercial purposes, including the date of their latest HIV test and HIV status. In 2021, Grindr was already fined €5,800,000 by Norwegian authorities for breaking #GDPR as it shared users' data without their consent with third-party companies for advertising purposes. 👉 How long before we realize that these tech giants have no regard for our #intimacy? Kudos to Chaya Hanoomanjee from Austen Hays for leading this strategic litigation, which may shed new light onto exploitative practices of dating apps and improve standards for the whole #sextech sector. #digitalrights #techlaw #dataprotection #LGBT

At this year’s AIDSWatch, advocates called on members of Congress to pass the Real Education and Access for Healthy Youth Act (REAHYA) which would support comprehensive, medically accurate, LGBTQ+ inclusive sexual education programs for youth. LGBTQ+ youth are often left out of sex ed curriculum, with REAHYA we can ensure queer youth are involved in these important conversations. With inclusive sexual education that provides information to youth on HIV testing, prevention and treatment, we can ensure that we end the HIV epidemic while empowering youth to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
