Mozilla lays off 60 people, wants to build AI into Firefox! Mozilla, the organization behind Firefox, is undergoing significant changes in its product strategy. After appointing a new interim CEO, the company plans to reduce investment in products like its VPN, Relay, and Online Footprint Scrubber. It will also shut down Hubs, a 3D virtual world, and scale back investment in its mozilla.social Mastodon instance, leading to around 60 layoffs. My former team :) As far as compilers go, JavaScriptCore is incredibly interesting. JavaScript isn't exactly easy when it comes to handling types and optimizations. Lots of interesting challenges. JavaScriptCore also has multiple tiers to be fast for a wide range of use cases. There is a lot to learn to add operations but the outcome is great. The first 3 engineers in the Android team (even before getting acquired by Google) were prodigies when it came to programming. - Brian Swetland: At the tender age of 5, his DIY Timex Sinclair clone (seriously, look it up!) sparked his BASIC passion. Interestingly, he didn’t finish his computer engineering degree because he was too busy already working for multiple companies. - Andy McFadden: From 13 onwards, Apple II's BASIC and assembly became his playground. He is the guy behind the Android’s Dalvik Runtime (the one that executes your compiled Dex code). - Ficus Kirkpatrick started programming at four (I wonder how this is even possible). He says that he has no memory of not having computers or not programming computers. He dropped out of high school for a full-time programming gig and eventually built most of Android's early camera, media drivers, and app-facing APIs. Even after being prodigies, during acquisition, they all feared interviews and used to joke around “If anyone asked what the Big O of anything was, I will say, I’m far too handsome to answer that question”. The moral of the story is that interviewing (especially DSA) is quite a different game from building products and the actual software engineering itself. While they have commonalities but performing better in one won’t necessarily translate to performing better in the other. I've never once needed to implement bubble sort, invert a binary tree or write a depth-first search algorithm. Are these skills useful? For some programming jobs, absolutely. You'll probably need them if you're applying for an L5 software engineering position at Google. But for 99% of front-end jobs out there, I'm a firm believer that a simple take-home coding test building a small web project is a better indicator of your current skills than a whiteboard interview testing for specific DSA questions. I get that these show problem solving abilities, but they're also very disconnected from the vast majority of day-to-day front-end work.
