National Police campaigns this week have used a narrative that 99% of young people under the age of 29 do not carry knives. LET'S BREAK THIS DOWN: 2021 Census data shows that: 29.1% of all people in England and Wales (17.3 million) were under 25 years old. This means that in excess of 173,000 young people carry knives. Official government data shows a steady increase in knife crime since COVID measures, with 50,500 knife incidents nationally in the year ending March 2023 (an average of 138 incidents per day). Knife crime continues to escalate and there is evidence to suggest that the carrying of knives by young people is even worse than this data indicates. Unfortunately, more than ever, action, awareness and interventions around knife crime are necessary. Researchers say Connecticut's decade-old effort to reduce racial disparities in traffic stops by police has had a dramatic impact and is a model for the nation. It’s been another frightening week in London. With four people stabbed in just 42 hours and a fifth person a day later, it is clear that the streets of the nation’s capital are not safe under the current Mayor Sadiq Khan. The truth is this: on his watch, our city has become a lawless, dangerous place for its citizens. One incident even included a Metropolitan Police officer being attacked by an individual armed with a knife in Enfield, leaving residents of our great city asking the same question: when will the escalating cycle of violence stop? It’s little wonder that these are the problems we’re facing. The mayor has closed 37 police stations since he came to power in 2016. In the past 10 years, the average distance of Londoners to their nearest police station has doubled from 1.4km to 3.1km, with the effect being that there has been a persistent increase in violent crimes of around 11%. A recent study by the Centre for Economic Policy Research concluded that “higher distances [to a station] lowers police deterrence, and therefore increases the incidence of high-severity crimes”, highlighting the direct correlation between the Mayor’s laissez-faire attitudes towards policing and the epidemic of violence we face across the city. Under his leadership, the Met has also consistently struggled to recruit enough police officers, with many insiders highlighting that the lack of support from the Mayor was a fundamental part of the issue. It’s why we need a new type of politician; one who wants to support our brave police officers, and re-open our closed police stations. A politician who has a fully costed plan to deploy 10,000 new police officers to our streets and a vision to provide positive pathways for people to start addressing the causes of crime. QUESTION - How do you think this issue should be dealt with? The UK but mainly London has been grappling with a serious knife crime issue, and the situation is more alarming than ever. The attached photo vividly illustrates the extent of the problem—people are carrying large knives to public events (Notting Hill Carnival) with the sole intention to injure or kill someone. This is not just a reflection of our city's growing crime rates but also a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective solutions. As a community, we must address the root causes of this violence—whether through better education, stronger community engagement, or enhanced Policing. It's essential that we work together to make our streets safer for everyone. #LondonCrime #PublicSafety #CommunityAction

Over the last several years, the search for new police chiefs has become a more inclusive and transparent process. Cities are now incorporating community surveys, public meetings, and other mechanisms to gather valuable feedback from citizens about the qualities they want in their police chief. But it doesn’t stop there. Many cities have taken it a step further by providing dedicated web pages for their police chief search. These pages offer a detailed look at the entire process, allowing citizens to see how the search is being conducted, offer their input, and stay updated every step of the way. Public Safety. As Council debates budget minutiae, is this not the prime issue? Bike lanes, Bus lanes, renaming squares, toboganning bans, etc all have their own special interest voices, but public safety has to be JOB ONE! Lets tell council to reallocate funds to our police and other public safety measures. Then lets urge Ottawa to amend the current “catch and release” approach to offenders. Lets act.

The city went from being a murder capital to having 0 murders last year. There is an overarching point to be made here: To trigger the change, there needs to be combination of (1) economic and community development and (2) strong policing and law & order. A long-term and short-term approach, respectively. Economic activity needs to act as a trigger, bringing jobs and businesses to an area, which allows for local hiring and engagement. This can be dubbed a circular economy – which has proven to work in Europe. 🧑🏼💼 Simultaneously, we need to be strong on policing. A crime is a crime, and we need to act on it as such. We can NOT look at criminal acts as acts of “desperation.” We need to treat it as a criminal activity, otherwise it hurts the very same communities we’re trying to protect. Not to mention the fact it stumps growth, bringing us back to the 1st point on Econ development. Palo Alto was able to turn around its reputation, and the model can be enacted elsewhere around the country. However, this takes a concerted effort between law enforcement, local government, and of course constituents.
