Colleagues, I am looking for advice on something. Is anyone going to #ADSTAR2024 conference in Canberra to present an e-poster? I just found out that my application for a talk at #ADSTAR somehow was passed on to become an e-poster and, to be totally honest, presenting a poster is not something I have done since I was a #PhD student. What are you doing? Is anyone presenting an e-poster? Is it worth it? Presenting a poster is definitely not very attractive, but I am keen to take advice on this. #defence #presentation #DSTG Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG)

I don't often feel the need to quote myself (as that always feels like LinkedIn pomposity) but I've been writing a submission this morning and this feels too good not to share! This is backed up by my MSc research into Innovation in ISR, which is clearly showing that the challenges in adoption of innovation / innovative ideas into complex Defence arenas are rarely technical in nature. More often the issues originate from structural, organisational, legal and commercial processes that simply don't cope with high tempo operations in evolving battlespaces*. This isn't about "fighting the last war" or "learning the wrong lessons from Ukraine"; it's about the fundamental challenges and the gulf between high-tempo innovation (which is largely originating from SMEs) and traditional large-scale acquisition (traditionally contracted out to large Primes). We MUST be better than we are. It's simply not good enough. What are your thoughts? *See my earlier post about a tactical UAS with a lifespan measured in decades... #DefenceInnovation #DoingThingsDifferently #DefenceSMEs

NGAD: A 6th Generation Fighter Money Pit? Some say that just one NGAD stealth fighter could cost as much as $300 million. Will the jump in capabilities above the F-22 and F-35 be worth that big price tag? Is NGAD Worth the Money? As of last year, the U.S. now operates more than 10,000 additional air platforms than China. While this figure is promising, the gap between the two countries is rapidly dwindling. In addition to sheer quantity, Beijing has been modernizing its aerial fleets over the last decade. The U.S. no longer is the world’s sole operator of fifth-generation platforms,...

Account Director @ The Information Lab | Helping companies amplify their BI capability with world-class consultants
It was unbelievable to see the first concept of how the new Tempest aircraft from BAE Systems has progressed over the last 18 months. A number of people in the stands were emphasising the importance of harnessing much larger volumes of received data to enable incredible future capabilities such as the enhanced radar. Apart from the size of the aircraft (not far off a tennis court), one of the most impressive aspects of the GCAP programme is how a multi-national program such as this is make effective use of data. We all know how many legacy systems there are within large organisations, so the ability to effectively cooperate securely between multiple countries and thousands of international employees and partner companies in this way is one of the most impressive facets of the program... at least until the aircraft starts flying. Great to see this concept in person.

As the Chief Engineer for our Lockheed Martin UK designed and developed SkyKeeper Command and Control capability, I’m continuously challenged to not only ensure today’s needs for our customers are being addressed through agile development, but also to look ahead into what the capability will need to deliver in years, and even decades to come; to ensure we enable our customers mission. The rapidly evolving threat landscape is driving changing requirements at a far greater pace than ever before, and they’re increasing in complexity too. SkyKeeper has flexibility and adaptability at the heart of the system – it addresses bespoke requirements and is able to integrate across the digital battlespace to deliver a comprehensive capability. Integration and interoperability have never been more important. In the Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) domain, there is a critical need for capabilities to be more flexible, adaptable and manoeuvrable, and there needs to be a development pathway to assure the capability will be able to grow as the threat landscape evolves. The development of SkyKeeper Form Factors addresses these needs – the capability has been designed with a modular open architecture to be fully adaptive and agile, covering all mission scenarios. Click through to our recent article to find out more about how this next gen GBAD solution is an integrator and force multiplier for the armed forces: https://lnkd.in/eWP722iz #GBAD #SkyKeeperCommand #SkyKeeperManoeuvre #SkyKeeperFlex #SkyKeeperEdge

Critical Development Milestone for F-16 Pilot Protection and Performance Capability We are proud to have successfully completed the development phase of our next-generation Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) for the F-16 Viper Block 70/72 programme. This new AFE ensemble, featuring a flight jacket with an integrated life preserver and lightweight coverall, represents a major step forward in replacing legacy equipment. By leveraging advanced design principles developed for the F-35 programme, we are setting new standards for pilot safety, comfort, and performance across all mission profiles. With development now complete, we are moving into serial production, with the first deliveries scheduled for early 2025 to Taiwan and Morocco. This is a significant achievement for the team, and we look forward to enhancing pilot protection and operational capability globally. Read the release now 👇 or talk to the team this week at the F-16 Proven Aircraft TCG Worldwide Review in Ogden, UT. https://lnkd.in/eV_inBBU #SurvitecDefence | #F16Viper | #AFE | #PilotProtection | #MissionReady

At Farnborough International Air Show, #Leonardo has announced the launch of a comprehensive capability enhancement package for the #M346 integrated training system including the aircraft’s core avionics, navigation/identification, mission equipment and ground training capabilities. The move reflects the training needs to align pilot’s skills to the evolution dictated by modern multi-domain battlefields, combat air technology, and information management. This latest development leverages the inherent growth capability embedded into the M-346 design as well as ten years of proven in-service experience with leading air forces across geographies and is an integral part of the broader organisational digitization roadmap initiative, fully consistent with Leonardo’s longer-term strategy. As such, both #training and #fighter variants will benefit from these enhancements to deliver even greater capabilities to the market for a wide spectrum of applications, while implying significant margin for further developments in the future. The #M346T Block 20’ and #M346F Block 20’ are the designations for the new standard. The new #Block20 standard will not be limited to the platform itself, but rather to the entire system including the ground based training system and shall be enabled by the widespread implementation of #digitalization powered by #ArtificialIntelligence. Lorenzo Mariani, Co-General Manager of Leonardo, stated: “Training represents a core area of expertise at Leonardo and the M-346 integrated training system is the backbone of our value proposition to ensure fighter pilots are well prepared to face modern and complex air challenges, today and in the future. As we are fully involved into next generation combat air developments, this latest progress of the M-346 testifies that we’re making sure the most appropriate training solutions are thoroughly embedded in this commitment. We strongly believe the type’s constantly evolving features will continue to deliver second-to-none benefits for users in its market segment, both for training and operational / light fighter roles, making it an ideal candidate for the future of fighter training in Europe and in other geographies.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dcn3v7jc #LDOFIA2024 #FIA2024
