In his recent Mann Ki Baat episode, our Honourable PM - Shri Narendra Modi Ji highlighted the growing threat of “digital arrest” scams, where fraudsters impersonate officials over video calls to scare people with fake arrest warrants, deepfake videos, and fabricated accusations. These scams prey on fear and confusion, making victims feel compelled to comply. To tackle this rising threat, the Ministry of Home Affairs has established a high-level committee, and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has alerted police forces nationwide for immediate response. In light of these threats, it's vital for citizens to know how to respond effectively and for us to raise awareness across the society. What victims can do: 1. Stay calm and question: Legitimate authorities won’t demand money over video calls. Always ask for official verification. 2. File a complaint: Immediately proceed with filing a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal here (https://cybercrime.gov.in/) and register the complaint by calling the cybercrime helpline at 1930. 3. Inform your bank: Notify your bank if payments were made to potentially freeze or recover funds. 4. Preserve evidence: Save call logs, screenshots, and other evidence to assist law enforcement. 5. Notify local law enforcement: Report to your local police station, which can coordinate with cybercrime units. 6. Share your experience: By speaking out, victims can help protect others from similar scams. How can we spread awareness: 1. Community outreach programs: Host workshops to help people recognize and report scams effectively. 2. Social media education: Share videos and posts detailing red flags and steps to verify official contacts. 3. Public-Private partnerships: Organize webinars and set up helplines for immediate reporting and verification. 4. Traditional media campaigns: Use TV, radio, and print to spread awareness, especially to offline audiences. Is this my cyber karen moment...? Recently if you've been anywhere near a TV for longer than 5 minutes, you'd have likely have seen or heard this ad - promoting Wise's "international" money transfer feature. It's not the premise of the business model - I think transfers are a necessary day to day event. What I disagree with, is the way in which they advertised the idea - and here's why. ➡️In the first 10 seconds of this ad, we see a elder parent, being sent a text message from her son - a generic "Hi mum....pls send euros 😬". ➡️ The ad plays heavily onto emotions, urgency and expedience. The "😬" emoji implies & creates a sense of urgency/immediacy on the parent to what is an extremely vague request for money. As a result of sending money so quickly at such a request, this ad is purely a celebration and party. The mum is being praised as "the best in the world". So what's the problem...? 1️⃣ The activities and behaviours in this ad are extremely poignant to current threats faced by Australians at the moment. The "Hi Mum" scam was an extremely prolific and common scam in Australia trhoughout 2022 and 2023. An extremely simplified description of what this scam was - was that it was a scam which started off with someone receiving a "Hi Mum" text or WhatsApp message, which was then followed up with an excuse for money needing to be sent urgently. 2️⃣ In 2022 Australians lost over $7 million to the "Hi Mum" scam. In just one case alone in Victoria, a woman lost $11,000. In a media statement made by the victim Nina Merrilees, she said “They used emojis, just talked about, “I’ve got these bills to pay” and (My daughter and I) have done that before.” 🤔 Thinking back to the Wise money ad, does that sound familiar....? 3️⃣ Alerts from multiple Australian agencies (the ACMA, Scamwatch, ACSC, Global, Local & Federal Police, News & Media outlets) have tried to raise public awareness about the scam, and weeks spent attempting to retrieve lost funds. This ad is at complete odds with the behaviours being promoted - particularly for the elderly in order to protect themselves. 4️⃣ In January this year, the ACMA released another advisory "Scam Alert - Re-emergence of ‘Hi mum’ scam". In the words of the ACMA's advisory itself, "reports to the ACMA about ‘Hi mum’ scams are increasing again". In my opinion (and that's all it is) - the timing of this ad could not be worse. By normalizing urgent requests for money from supposed family members, these ads desensitize people to red flags that security experts have worked hard to highlight. At a time when we are facing a re-emergence of such a costly & prevalent issue, such ads could contribute to engraining behaviours that contribute to costs far more than $7m. With the volatility of the landscape, companies need to be more responsible with the way they promote services and the current cyber landscape in their target regions. https://lnkd.in/gAR6Tbzy #awareness #cyber #security

Cell phone and social media misuse are most often the "root" of verbal and physical aggressive behavior in our schools and communities. Just telling students "Don't do that" is not the main solution. We have to take time to teach children (& parents/caregivers) about the traps and how to respond to traps in an age appropriate ways.
