Tires are having a moment. They're at the top of my feed in #Netflix! Woulda thunk that a reality show named #Tires would be #Netflix's algorithmically-recommended TV Show I binge this weekend? Well, I guess I just answered my own question. Obviously Netflix knows I spent a lot of my career in that industry. It used to be that #Netflix knowing this about me was creepy. No more. Now, it's considered very helpful. But still, this just proves that if you get a interesting enough group of people together, Film them, and then stream it on Netflix, It does not matter what the subject material actually is. Wrexham AFC and Selling Sunset are prime examples. This is just a slightly less glamorous industry. The people sell the show. The story sells the show. There's a #SocialMediaMarketing take-away from this. People are always interesting. Blend your product into the background with them authentically, and you can make connections with people that will move products and drive new ideas. Great stuff. I plan on watching! Do you? #SocialMediaMarketing 😊

Recapping a busy end to August and early September as everything kicks off for the run into the year's end. Firstly, I'm delighted for Akhila Khanna to be joining ITV, wonderful to have worked with her and the team over at ITV to make this move happen. Additionally, I was fortunate to visit Edinburgh for the TV Festival, marking my third time. As always, the event is a barometer for the industry and the insights were both eye-opening and thought-provoking. A few key takeaways really stood out to me: • 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 is more like the independent film world of 10-15 years ago. We're seeing UK commissions, even from the likes of the BBC, only able to contribute a third of the production budget, in the case of Left Bank Pictures adaptation of 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥. • 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 are stepping up and taking greater risks, with examples like Banijay Rights bringing in partners for commissioned projects like 𝘚𝘈𝘚 𝘙𝘰𝘨𝘶𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘦𝘴. It’s an evolving landscape, and agility is key. • The most significant topic was raised in the 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗧𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 by James Graham: class. Almost half of Brits identify as working class, yet only 8% in TV come from similar backgrounds. This disparity, coupled with the industry’s economic challenges, makes it harder than ever for those without fiscal or social capital to break in. My colleague Lilian Morse wrote an excellent summary on the most prominent topic, I could not sum it any better: https://lnkd.in/eV_BzrcP All in all, there are still some tough times ahead, but we have turned the corner and green shoots are here. As an industry, we need to do more to open doors, let's continue pushing for innovation, collaboration and inclusivity in all forms. The future of television has changed completely, as both news and entertainment have transitioned to multiple levels of digital platforms. Forty years later, we are experiencing a new reality where traditional TV channels have faded away and no longer exist as some remember them. News consumption has shifted to Google, which holds a significant share of the market, as well as YouTube and various digital subscription-based channels. Google and YouTube have become dominant players in news and entertainment, providing instant, personalized information through algorithms that cater to user preferences. Traditional TV news is no longer the primary source of information, as people now rely on news websites, social media, podcasts, and platforms that aggregate news from multiple sources. At the same time, subscription-based streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video dominate entertainment, replacing the traditional TV model. Viewers are no longer dependent on fixed schedules but can choose when and how they watch their favorite content. Even advertising has evolved. Traditional TV commercials have declined, as advertisers now invest in targeted online ads through social media and streaming platforms. If this trend continues, the concept of traditional television may disappear entirely in the coming decades, giving way to a fully digital, personalized, and interconnected media landscape. The future of television is on-demand, interactive, and tailored to the individual needs of each user.
