New article just out – Published in JGR Oceans First attempt to successfully simulate the wavenumber-4 pattern of Southern Ocean sea surface temperature using a coupled model, uncovering the underlying physical processes. The main findings are: • Southwestern subtropical Pacific SST plays a crucial role in generating SST wavenumber-4 pattern via circumpolar atmospheric variability • The ocean mixed layer and upper ocean processes are found to be important for the growth and decay of the SST wavenumber-4 pattern • The tropical SST variability has a very limited effect on the generation of SST wavenumber-4 pattern Find the full article here: https://lnkd.in/en94BgMD

Cruising the Arctic Ocean with Jeffrey Welker of the University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Oulu, Finland, and Ben Kopec of the Michigan Technological University, the L2140-i with the Continuous Water Sampler is analyzing δ18O and deuterium excess in surface seawater to pinpoint the sources of the increasing influx of freshwater in the Arctic Ocean. Our paper on Effects of Global Dust Storms on water vapor in the Southern Polar Region of Mars has just been published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. It can be downloaded following this link: https://lnkd.in/grcrVEpw We found that water vapor was significantly reduced in the Martian polar atmosphere following the three most recent global dust storms. Why this is happening is not quite clear: dust storms could be changing how water vapor is transported by atmospheric flows across Mars, or they could be changing the way water vapor is released from the ground. More work is needed to solve this puzzle!

Bon voyage to Dr Mardi McNeil! 👋 Dr McNeil, a SAEF investigator and marine geoscientist with Geoscience Australia, is joining the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research’s latest voyage aboard the RV #Polarstern. 🛳 Dr McNeil is joining an international team of 53 scientists on an expedition to East Antarctica to study how its ice sheet has changed in the past. Very little is known about how the East Antarctic ice sheet interacts with the seabed along the coast and continental shelf. Dr McNeil and the team will be aiming to fill some of these knowledge gaps by mapping the seabed to identify geological features and patterns. These will provide clues into the past movement of ice shelves and glaciers. 🔎 The research will seek to understand how far from land the ice extended, its thickness and depth at different periods in the past. These insights into the past response of the ice sheet to climatic and environmental change will offer vital information to help predict its future. #ExtratropicalCyclone (identified as #ColdFront, #WarmFront and #OccludedFront), named by the Brazilian Navy as "#TropicalStorm #Akara", was present on Monday, February 19, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. local time in #Brazil and #Uruguay (19:00 UTC international time), approximately centered on the South-West Atlantic Ocean more than 700 km southeast of #Florianópolis, more than 840 km south-east of #PortoAlegre, more than 1250 km from #PuntaDelEste and more than 1330 km northeast of #Montevideo; while moving to the SouthSouthEast. Its southward movement component may not be surprising considering the effects of the Brazilian Warm Current with its flow of heat and moisture feeding the convection of the frontal atmospheric depression as it moves (See sea surface temperatures #SST captured by remote sensing satellite according to the color scale in degrees Kelvin, example 300ºK =27ºC).
