"Diversity in visual effects is not just a goal; it's a necessity. Embracing a variety of perspectives and backgrounds enhances creativity, fosters innovation, and ensures a more inclusive representation of stories on screen. By valuing diversity in our industry, we enrich the tapestry of visual storytelling and create a space where everyone's unique voice can contribute to the magic of cinema. Let's celebrate differences and work together to make our visual effects community truly reflective of the diverse world we live in. #InclusionMatters #VisualEffectsDiversity"

Is this the end? Every Christmas, Christmas carols are heard and sung from various corners. It is a melodious feel, one of comfort and joy. That was what Reginald Fessenden wanted for the ships at sea in 1906, Christmas Eve. So, from a makeshift studio in Brant Rock, Boston, he played Christmas carols for them. That was the first #voiceover. It was done using an alternator transmitter, a device able to send quality audio signals - albeit weak ones. Later, Walt Disney recorded the first synchronised #voiceover in animation. That birthed Mickey Mouse. #Voiceovers have evolved, going through several changes over the years. Some of these include: #podcast boom #voice synthesis technology that gave birth to voice-to-speech technology. #immersiveaudio experiences, thanks to the growth of #virtualreality and #augmentedreality #AIassisted casting where some platforms are using artificial intelligence to match #voiceactors #remote recording where there are more virtual collaborations between studios and #voiceoverartists, thanks to Covid-19. With some of these changes, you would think there is no more work for #voiceoverartists. However, this calls for #upskilling and giving your best to remain #relevant. What changes are happening in your field? How are you coping? FILM AND TV STUDENTS PUT SPECIAL EFFECTS INTO ACTION WITH VIRTUAL PRODUCTION Virtual production—a cutting-edge approach to special effects—is one of many reasons cinema students are flocking to DePaul. Using the same equipment as Oscar-nominated pros, DePaul students are filming live actors in sync with LED screens, all powered by a game engine. Filming a virtual production scene takes a large, interdisciplinary cast and crew. This March, acting students from The Theatre School will join classmates studying directing, animation, game design and more at the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media. They plan to film live scenes—written and designed by students—including one set on an amusement park ride. “Our students are taking creative risks that a lot of big production companies aren’t doing,” says Brian Andrews, assistant professor and chair of post-production. He says virtual production is used to spectacular effect on many Oscar-nominated films, from “Poor Things” to “Guardians of the Galaxy.” DePaul’s School of Cinematic Arts was among the first in the Midwest to teach and use virtual production. This fall, DePaul is on track to offer minors in virtual production stage operation and virtual production environment design. Late last year, DePaul Cinespace added two additional sound stages for a total of six, which include professional-grade sets, lighting and design. In total, the university now has nearly 60,000 square feet of space on the studio lot. Film and TV production are revving back up in Chicago, and students learn on the larger studio lot where hits “The Bear” and “Chicago PD” are filmed. “Virtual production can put any person in any place. From a sports broadcast to a CEO speaking with investors, there are possibilities for this technology across many industries,” Andrews says. Learn more here - https://lnkd.in/gzTQMNGE

Back for day 2 of Paradigms! An amazing talk this morning by Bomo Piri, on the power of sonic branding and the way in which audio can evoke emotions in listeners. The importance of audio can often be overlooked in branding, but it really elevates projects and creates much deeper connections. This stems across video too. Good quality sound designs adds an amazing level of dynamism and quality to animation and motion projects. To quote Bomo, “sound can do a lot, and we don’t use it enough.” Frontify #paradigms2024
