We are finally about to enter one of my favourite periods every four years, the Olympic Games. I love it for many reasons but mostly for the fact that it brings us all together in the UK as ‘Team GB’ regardless of where we are perched in front of the TV, gripped by the action. I am very jealous of our Parisian colleagues at PriceHubble, who can nip out of the office to catch the action! It brings back so many wonderful memories of that golden, sun-drenched fortnight in London 12 years ago. The plans for Paris look impressive, especially with their focus on leaving a ‘legacy of sustainability’ (love the tables made from shuttlecocks). But what about London 12 years on – what legacy has been achieved from the games? We delved into the detail in a recent infographic on our Dataloft by PriceHubble market insight platform. The London games cost £8.8 billion to stage but had already delivered £14.2 billion in economic value by 2014, with sustainable long-term outcomes for the community. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the largest urban park project in Europe in the last 150 years, exemplifies long-term community benefits, with all Olympic venues still actively used as event, culture or employment hubs. I recently went white water rafting at the Olympic kayaking venue, Lee Valley. Not only was it still beautifully landscaped but it was buzzing with people enjoying activities or eating at the restaurants and bars. The London Olympics also spurred major infrastructure projects like the Elizabeth Line and Westfield Stratford, with continued development at park sites showing the legacy of the Games twelve years on. All eyes are now on Paris, where we hope for a rush of gold from our various countries across PriceHubble, as well as the same lasting legacy that has been achieved from London 2012. 🏅 Today marks the launch of the 2024 Summer #OlympicGames in #Paris. 🌍 With competitors from over 200 #countries, 326,000 spectators in attendance and an estimated 1 billion people watching the event globally - all eyes will be on the #French capital this summer. So, how does the city maximise its moment in the spotlight from a #communications perspective? 1️⃣ In ING Media's latest “Europe’s Most Talked About Cities” research, we revealed that #culture is the key component which drives digital content. Paris leapfrogged #London to become Europe’s Most Talked About City for the first time in 2023; significant events such as Men’s Fashion Week in January, Paris Fashion Week in September, and The Rugby World Cup propelled the capital to the top spot. 📰 Yet the effect of hosting the #Olympics and #Paralympics is yet to make its mark on Paris’ content footprint. Only 2% of digital content about Paris in 2023 referenced the games. The Olympic opening ceremony has long been considered the holy grail of event production, and Paris took it to another level. As professionals in event production, we take a look at a few key aspects of this mega event: 1. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 ✨ Paris focused on creative storytelling rather than expensive technology. The ceremony showcased that creativity can outshine flashy lights and big budgets, a lesson for all event productions. 2. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆 🏙️ Hosting the event in a live city, over 6 km, is like performing open-heart surgery on a moving bus. The preparation and scale were incredible, setting a new benchmark in event production. 3. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 🌱 This Olympics was the most sustainable ever, using existing city structures and emphasizing the need for event productions to be environmentally conscious. 4. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 🇫🇷 Paris used the Olympics to promote itself creatively and effectively, proving that a smaller budget can still yield a high ROI through innovative production solutions. 5. 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 🚀 The "Paris solution" will be a reference for future large-scale events.
