Why do most car parks look like this? Seriously car parks look like they have been outright bullied by cars and pedestrians, absolutely battered. Car parks are simply accepted to be these wet, worn looking, cracked, and rusty pieces of infrastructure we have to pass through on our way to a better space. Truth is, we - along with our vehicles - have not bullied our car parks...we are innocent. However the concrete in the car parks is under attack from several factors: regular load and abrasion from vehicle traffic, contamination from road salts, grease, and water brought in by our vehicles, and carbonation due to exhaust fumes which tends to trigger a surface reaction in the ceilings and columns. The problem is the concrete is not protected from the inside out, surface coatings generally are just a giant plaster stuck over the concrete, a superficial short term solution. Surface coatings tend to lift, bubble, crack and tear off leaving the concrete exposed to contaminants which cause the structure to corrode even faster. How do we fix this?
