One of the hard questions in quantum technology (which probably holds true for much of deep tech in general) is *what is the right time to move from the lab to a startup*. This is a complex question with multiple sides: 1. academia is not well suited to implement focused projects working towards a "product" - generations of students come and go making the knowledge fragmented, the ultimate goals are not aligned (pursue of knowledge vs commercial pursue), innovation practices as well as management is very loose, timelines are different, academia is geared towards publishing papers, not holding onto an invention until it's patented, etc. 2. for deep tech startups, years of research are necessary before getting to a working prototype/IP that can become the core of a startup - VCs are not so willing (and shouldn't) to finance this pure research phase. 3. grants are a good way to finance projects until there is a clear commercialisation potential and strategy - but they are scarce, competitive and location-dependent. There is also the risk of quantum entrepreneurs to become "grantrepreneurs", another thing that makes VCs a little less happy. 4. the capital required to develop quantum technologies - in particular hardware - is significant - not to mention that highly skilled talent is scarce and therefore expensive too. These startups are virtually impossible to be "bootstrapped" unless in very rare cases - so what are the best mechanisms to support these ventures at their early stages? So, taking quantum computing hardware as an example - what is (was) the right time for them to spin out of their original research labs? Should they have waited a little longer, reaching tens or hundreds of qubits before crossing the boundary? Would that have slowed them down significantly, risking loosing important IP? Curious to read your thoughts on this! #quantum #quantumcomputing #startups #VC #innovation #deeptech #quantumtechnology #entrepreneurship #technology

Is France #quantum ready? This question is important, especially on World Quantum Day! In Europe and France, the quantum ecosystem is thriving thanks to the groundbreaking work of top research centers. These hubs not only foster novel ideas but also cultivate the next generation of quantum pioneers, fueling the rise of cutting-edge startups. We're witnessing a remarkable deeptech renaissance across Europe, with talented entrepreneurs leading the charge in transformative fields like quantum computing. In 2020, France unveiled its visionary "France 2030" strategy to strengthen its innovation capabilities. This comprehensive plan earmarks €1B to fuel innovation and development in critical quantum-related domains such as quantum computing, sensing, and communication. Then, in 2023, the France Deeptech Association emerged as a pioneering initiative, uniting all the key players within the vibrant French deeptech ecosystem. The association aims to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and growth in cutting-edge technologies. However, transitioning from idea to enterprise poses unique challenges. That's why a supportive ecosystem backed by early-stage investors is indispensable. At Da Vinci Labs, we take pride in nurturing France's burgeoning quantum ecosystem. We work to empower researchers and innovators by providing ecosystem development (via EC-funded collaborative projects featuring Da Vinci Labs, such as the EQUALITY Project), marketing & communication (via the Da Vinci Studios), business planning and fundraising services (via our investor Zaz Ventures & Quantum Launchpad). #quantumcomputing #startups #quantum #deeptech
