Installation view of my work "hand of god", 2024 as part of the exhibition "Be here now - The nominees’ exhibition for the Haus am Kleistpark 2024 Art Prize" 30 August – 6 October 2024 Mixed-media installation, 280 x 160 x 110 cm Full-HD video, loop, 12:40 min, sound, 55” monitor, print on fabric, LED light, silicone, pigments, metal No other topic currently polarizes as much as the use of machine learning systems (AI) in our private and professional environments. The question of whether it is a curse or a blessing does not spare the realm of art either. In the multimedia work "the hand of god," I address the role of the hand as a tool for artists and the transformation of this significant role due to the increasing influence of automated, non-human imagery and artificial intelligence (AI) on art. The title refers to the sculpture by Rodin, which has been reproduced and reinterpreted multiple times. Traditionally, the artist's hand symbolized their genius: it transferred the spirit onto the material. At the same time, the hand is one of the more challenging subjects for AI-based image generators, as it is often rendered incorrectly or distorted. In art history, the hand has been a recurring motif that referred both to its symbolic value and to the creative process itself. The work has been developed in collaboration with various machine learning systems, such as speech, image, and video generators, and has been expanded by me through handcrafted sculptures made of silicone. Congratulations on your fascinating installation, "Hand of God"! The exploration of the artist's hand in the context of AI is both timely and thought-provoking. How do you see the role of traditional artistry evolving with these new technologies? Best of luck with the exhibition!
