The Birth of AI Art On a recent trip to London, I visited the magnificent Victoria & Albert Museum and found a small exhibition of digital art. The works were from the pioneering digital art collector Patric D. Prince who had donated her collection to V&A. The exhibition included works from Harold Cohen (1928-2016), creator of AARON, a computer program considered to be the first AI solution for art making. AARON was capable of producing paintings and drawings autonomously. To generate the actual artworks, Cohen built his own computer-controlled plotters and painting machines. The first iteration of AARON was built already in the 1970's. First iterations produced line drawings, later came paint and color. Cohen built these systems "to understand what art is." He definitely didn't see AARON as an artist, but not a tool either - rather, it was a kind of artist's assistant. A lot has changed in 50 years. It’s the central idea behind one of the movement’s signature images, René Magritte’s 1929 painting The Treachery of Images. . Famously, the artwork features just two basic components: a picture of a pipe and an accompanying caption that reads, “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”). Magritte’s gesture was both revolutionary and remarkably banal. . It works because we’re so used to negotiating the gap between signifier and signified that we almost forget the gap exists at all. In the early 20th century, the Dadaists redefined art by designing things called "ready-mades." Ordinary objects became works of art by being placed in a secondary context. In this case, the artist's work is to add creativity to an object, transforming it into a secondary reality, which, due to the use of creativity, is more valuable than the primary reality. For example, a piece of wood becomes a work of art by a carpenter. Michelangelo creates a sculpture from stone, or Da Vinci designs the Mona Lisa on a canvas. In reality, the work of art is not an imitation of an imitation but a secondary reality that surpasses objective reality by creativity.
