As renewable energy becomes more prevalent, how can we ensure the electric grid withstands the impact of extreme weather? In a first-of-its-kind study, analysts from NREL and Sharply Focused modeled scenarios to understand the answers to these questions and change the way we define "extreme weather." The study found that traditional extreme weather events don't necessarily pose greater challenges to a grid with more wind and solar power. However, prolonged moderate weather conditions, like several days of low wind and solar energy during hot or cold spells, could create new challenges. This highlights the need for new strategies to ensure the reliability and resilience of a future renewable energy grid. Boring is a good thing—sometimes! No out-of-the-ordinary activity was seen at any of our 30 storage systems in the path of the solar eclipse that passed across much of North America last week. ☀️ Maintaining reliability during events like these takes an “all-hands-on-deck” approach from generation resources. Storage systems across ERCOT behaved exactly as needed, charging right before the solar energy dropped off, dispatching to help balance the load as the eclipse moved across the state, and recharging after the solar energy returned. 🔋 This shows just a fraction of the enormous potential energy storage has to support grid stability and flexibility as we look towards a future powered entirely by renewable resources. 🌱 👉 More in Energy-Storage.news: https://lnkd.in/gMNj-2Y4 #EnergyStorage #Decarbonisation #RenewableEnergy #SolarEclipse Karl Meeusen

Despite wind and solar power growth exceeding all expectations in the last two decades, the global electricity demand has grown even faster! This means clean energy isn’t being produced fast enough to halt coal and gas-burning generation. Hopefully, our clean energy can catch up in the next few years. Do you think we would ever be able to replace fossil fuels with clean energy? https://lnkd.in/dYKcshY #netVendorIt #SimplerBetterSmarter #netVendor #PuttingThePowerInYourHands
