Return to campus is far from ordinary this semester, amid shifting campus policies and, at times, campus Antisemitism. Our students deserve to learn and thrive in and out of the classroom, but that is fraught for many students, their parents by extension. My Jmore article offers practical tools to manage the stress of coursework and these additional challenges. They may need to revamp #executivefunction strategies to deal with tough courses and campus conflict. Final outcome is that half of the population is Pro Self irrespective of background color caste race religion nationality gender. New labels do not equal new thinking. The concept of 'gifted' is still stubbornly embedded in our educational structures, with its legacy of social immobility, racism and sexism. Students can be 'more able' when they have more financial resources, more access, more visibility, or more cultural acceptance. PREJUDICE: Does it make sense? Prejudice literally means "judging before." It involves the formation of attitudes toward persons, groups, and situations before there is any experience with or study of them. Prejudice is usually learned from others, such as parents and peers. Prejudices that involve negative stereotypes of others, particularly identifiable groups, can undermine the self-esteem of persons in those groups and also deprive them of opportunities that require positive assessments of their abilities and behaviors. Prejudice that impacts the structures and institutions of society intensifies class and group conflict, undermines equality of services, & fuels resentment that can erupt into violence. Prejudice can be eliminated & mitigated through education and experience that cultivates a greater understanding and acceptance of those different from ourselves. #prejudice #bias #perspective #openmind
