Through education, advocacy, and collective action, families serve as dynamic agents of change, fostering resilience and sustainability within their communities. By nurturing a culture of environmental consciousness and stewardship, families can not only safeguard our planet for future generations but also cultivate a legacy of interconnectedness and responsibility. Currently, the more than 1 billion people around the world are living in informal settlements — their homes often lack basic services, land tenure security and climate resilience. 🚰 A home without access to clean water means families are at risk of life-threatening diseases. 📄 A home without land rights means families live in fear of eviction with their futures on hold. 🏚 A poorly built home in a disaster-prone area means families are more vulnerable to climate change. 📢 A home where civic participation is limited means families struggle to have their voices heard. Through the #homeequals campaign, we're not only tacking the issues that come with living in informal settlements but also that come with our changing climate. By 2050, it is estimated that 215 million people will potentially be impacted by Climate Migration, becoming refugees in their own countries. We're advocating for global leaders to take action, calling attention to the opportunity to promote climate adaptation in the places where people need it most, especially in informal settlements. The climate crisis contributes to increasing inequality for many frontline communities and disproportionately affects persons with disabilities. The participation of people affected by climate change is critical to ensure responsive, accountable and effective disaster risk reduction and humanitarian programming. Inclusion and equal participation of all is a precondition to climate justice. CBM Global works with partners in countries that are vulnerable to climate-related disasters, which drives increased levels of risks, vulnerability, and human rights abuses. International Day of Families celebrated on the 15th of May, 2024 shines a spotlight on the critical intersection between families and climate change. As our planet faces increasing environmental challenges, families are on the front lines, bearing the brunt of its impacts. From displacement due to extreme weather events to economic instability caused by disrupted industries, the effects of climate change ripple through every aspect of family life. However, amidst these challenges lies an opportunity for empowerment and action. By educating and empowering families, we can cultivate a generation of climate-conscious citizens equipped to tackle environmental issues head-on. Through our commitment to ensuring Disability Disaster Risk Reduction, the Board Chair of CUAPWD participated in the Climate Change and People with Disabilities: Problems, Challenges, Perspectives, an international conference, organized by Behinderung und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit e.V. in Berlin Germany on the 13th of March 2024. The conference was aimed at evaluating the consequences of climate change on the lives of persons with disabilities, especially children and the elderly, with a view to German international cooperation, examine the question of how it can counter the negative consequences of climate change and make climate adaptation measures inclusive and barrier-free.

🌱 Aboriginal peoples are connected to the land and water in a way that the non-Indigenous simply cannot understand. That’s why this year’s International Day of Families, with its theme of "Families and Climate Action", is especially significant to AbSec. For countless millennia the First Nations tribes lived in harmony with their natural environment, pioneering such practices as bush regeneration and strategic burning. They understood the symbiotic relationship between the health of their native home and the welfare of their people, lessons that have been passed down to their ancestors living today. As with most negative phenomena, minorities like the First Nations are being affected more than most by climate change. It is especially important for Aboriginal communities that humankind finds a balance between industrial development and ecological sustainability. By creating and nurturing resilience-building initiatives, we empower children, young people and their families to become agents of positive change.
