Meet Demeter Deutschland winemaker Gut Steyerberg from the Nahe region at the Cool Climate Wine Summit in January. Read more about them here: https://lnkd.in/dTqMmZAN Free B2B Trade fair sign-up https://lnkd.in/dN9sSjk3 Marlene and Wilfried Jacobus were born with a passion for viticulture. From their close connection with nature grew the "mission" for an ecological way of farming. And because at Gut Steyerberg / Weingut Fuchs-Jacobus, they don’t do things halfway, they opted for the most consistent form: biodynamic viticulture according to Demeter guidelines. The Steyerberg in the Nahe Valley – Terroir for Great Wines The soil with its minerals, the topography, and the orientation to the sun, along with the mesoclimate and its weather phenomena, are the determining factors for the character of a wine. French winemakers have coined a term for this: "terroir." Steep Slope Viticulture Means Handwork The Steyerberg is a very special terroir: with a slope between 33° and 45°, it is very steep. Therefore, it is almost too steep for machinery everywhere. Only mechanical assistance is possible between the vine rows – everything else is done by hand. #nahe #nahewein #demeter #demeterwein #organicwine #ecovin #germanwine #organic #sustainable #greatwine #coolclimatewine #coolclimatewinesummit

‘Making the case for regenerative viticulture’ 💡🍇 Domaine Bousquet features in the latest issue of Harpers Wine & Spirit as one of the few wineries worldwide, and the first international winery, to be pioneering Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC). "We had to be successful to show the world of wine that working regeneratively was not only economically viable but a very positive business strategy," Domaine Bousquet's co-founder and CEO, Anne Bousquet, told Harpers. “Our commitment to regenerative viticulture is akin to where organics stood a decade ago — an emerging category with little consumer awareness. But consumer awareness is growing quickly, particularly as we become all too aware of the impact of our collective carbon footprint on climate change." The worldwide vineyard area continues to decline, according to Dr. John Barker, the new Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), during a press conference on the state of global viticulture and wine trade. In 2022 (the most recent data available), the vineyard area shrank by 0.5% to 7.2 million hectares, compared to 7.3 million hectares in 2021. The main factor contributing to this trend is the removal of vineyards in major wine-growing regions on both hemispheres. Within the European Union, the vineyard area decreased by 0.8% to 3.3 million hectares.

Experts suggest that within the typical 30-year lifespan of a vineyard, many regions will become too warm for luxury wine production from certain Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon. This is due to predicted temperature rises of 3.3°C by 2060, shifting Napa's climate from "warm" to "hot," beyond the ideal range for this grape. At Farmland LP, we're proactively navigating these changes, ensuring our land acquisitions, viticulture practices, and crop selections are resilient and sustainable, preserving our terroir, and securing our investment.
