As an in-house counsel, do you feel your work is undervalued because you are not seen as a revenue-generating department within the organization? I am sure we have all felt this way at some point in our careers. If you are experiencing this, here’s a practical approach you can use. Make it a habit of documenting your achievements, whether on a daily or weekly basis. Understand how your achievements have moved the organization closer towards its goals or have helped the organization achieve its goals. Then, present these contributions to your supervisor or management (as the case may be) in a clear and concise manner. Have you ever felt undervalued as an in-house counsel? How did you handle it? #valuecreation #costoptimization #profitoptimization #inhousecounsel #riskmanagement

Businesses typically place value on number and everything is understood from this perspective. Hence, there's no better way to highlight achievements than to quantify same and highlight it boldly in numbers. Whether it's cost savings which is the underlying benefit of legal risk management or even revenue generation in areas of debt recovery and glitch free project execution, when we put a number to it, it looks more interesting to those executive eyes and it is easier to measure. Another way is to highlight the impact of the legal team vis a vis the strategic goals of the organization, emphasizing how legal risk mitigation helped achieve or enhance the goals.

Great advice Iyiola Alokolaro-Oyefeso Value can also be garnered outside the organization. Another approach is to openly celebrate your big and small wins with your management. -you got an industry recognition -you completed a sought after certification -you were invited as a keynote speaker at a major event. Value is also a matter of perception. Your organization can begin to see you as valuable, when you communicate your impact externally.
