Navigating Safety Concerns as a Female Surveyor Since my last post, reality has hit me in a profound way. While I've always prided myself on being fearless, recent experiences have led me to question whether that boldness has bordered on ignorance. Upon graduating, I delved into freelancing as a surveyor's assistant, a role that often requires solo site visits. Previously, I'd always worked in pairs, but this new job dynamic left me grappling with concerns about my safety in the field. From entering cars with strangers to venturing into remote areas alone, the inherent risks became glaringly apparent. The alarming insecurity plaguing our country only exacerbated these worries. I vividly recall finding myself the lone female amidst three unfamiliar men in the dense forests of Epe, Lagos. In that moment, the realization dawned on me that anything could go wrong. Initially, I hesitated to voice my concerns, fearing they'd be dismissed as mere excuses stemming from my gender. I rationalized that a male surveyor wouldn't think twice about such situations. However, I've come to realize the fallacy in that thinking. Despite these safety concerns, I must admit that I relish the adventure that comes with my profession. To my fellow surveyors, particularly women in the field, how do you navigate the challenge of going to sites alone with strangers? Let's start a conversation about safety awareness in our industry and explore strategies to ensure the well-being of all surveyors, regardless of gender.

SAFETY TIPS FOR A SURVEYOR Few things that can be done are, You surely need a buddy man (Never Work Alone).... It's not good for you to go alone to the bush. Make sure to use personal protective equipment (PPE), maintain constant communication with colleagues or supervisors. Share your location and expected return time, be aware of potential hazards specific to the area and finally, biko 😂 trust your instincts (very important)

Is it easier to attract Greek cats than building control surveyors? There’s definitely more cats at Greek hotels than there are qualified building control surveyors. I saw some posts while I was away about the sheer volume of messages that some people get from recruiters. Other than avoiding generic, fishing messages… do you think an old fashioned chat about a specific role is better? It’s always easier to match your experience when I’ve spoken to you over the years. Or, where you’ve told me all the different factors you have to look at a new role. I know you’ll likely always be curious about what other businesses or authorities offer. I always am. But that doesn’t mean you want a message or a call about a job that you just happen to be near. What do you think is the best approach for a recruiter? What is less annoying!? With this cat, who I called Hattie, I just stole fish and sausages from the buffet at tea time. Can’t really do that to find a class 2 surveyor. #buildingcontrol #rbi #buildinginspector #bsr #buildingsafetyact

My career as a traveling superintendent has been my love of my life. I have always been in construction one way or another. Whether it was as a Carpenter at a young age Superintendent or office utility player where my field knowledge benefited on pre-con or assisting to close scope gaps in contracts. My career has led me to several companies and positions never straying far from my passion of this business I call life. I’ve been overlooked or eliminated by many companies as a potential candidate due to longevity at specific companies. Most for reasons out of most people’s control. Some for my decisions and some for the employer’s decisions. When I fell in love with this business it was exactly that “the business “ not a specific company. So the experience that I have gained not being “SPECIALIZED” in types of construction but in the business as a whole has benifited me for my knowledge. See the reality of our business is construction is a moving target. Some markets that are hot today may not be hot tomorrow. Companies downsize, markets dry up, and I’ve seen many companies go under in my time. For the lucky ones and grateful me, I have ALWAYS remained employed with very few dry spells. Because of my versatility and knowledge of what I truly love. The construction industry. So what I experience in our industry are companies making choices on facts that are irrelevant to our business, why would a company choose a candidate just for their longevity at a specific company in lieu of looking at the longevity a candidate that has been in our business for? After all the longevity in our construction industry is the main ingredient for a successful and meaningful career. Just a thought!
