Super excited to share BookTrust's latest impact report. 🌟 In 22/23 BookTrust supported 1.9 families across England, Wales and Northern Ireland - and a third of low-income families with children aged 1–4 (32%) through our new early years offer. 🌟Even more inspiring, 84% of families participating in our new Early Years offers say these prompted them to read more with their children. As someone who is still a newcomer, the magnitude of BookTrust's reach blows my mind. What makes it even more remarkable is the knowledge that this reach is deeply rooted in a commitment to driving impact and learning (check out our impact and learning models inside). Here's to reaching even more families and helping to ensure more children from low-income and vulnerable backgrounds experience the wide-ranging benefits of reading. 🚀
We're really pleased to share our Impact Report 2022/23 with you. Explore our impact model, our evidence-led approach to getting families reading, and what we got up to last year (as well as what families and our partners thought of it!) https://lnkd.in/eUNsBq7U

I’ve been thinking a lot about the need for real structural change when we talk about diversity and inclusion, particularly for Indigenous Peoples in Canada. In this article, co-authored in 2023 with Rebecca Chartrand, we delve into an Indigenous-first approach to DEI. This isn’t about checking boxes or fulfilling obligations—it’s about confronting the historical and systemic inequalities embedded in the foundation of this country. Indigenous peoples have long been marginalized, yet treaties signed with sovereign Indigenous nations laid the foundation for the prosperity many enjoy today. So, what does it mean to adopt an Indigenous-first mindset? How do we genuinely create space for Indigenous leadership—not just in symbolic terms but in meaningful, decision-making roles that influence policy, economics, and societal structures? I invite you to read the article and reflect on these questions. What does true equity look like, and how do we hold ourselves accountable to it? I’d love to engage in a deeper conversation about these issues. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gq7kpU3P #IndigenousLeadership #TruthAndReconciliation #StructuralChange #IndigenousFirst #EconomicReconciliation #EquityInAction

Wooohoo, a big step, my first selfie on LinkedIn! You can see how comfortable I am with selfies 🤣 This is from the European Civil Protection Forum, a @Myriad-EU policy workshop that I coordinated. We seized the chance to propose a workshop for the Forum, and it paid off! Our project Grant Agreement included a policy workshop, and leveraging this big European event was a great opportunity to get the right people around the table. And this is exactly what happened; the UN, World Bank, many representatives of the European Commission, and Red Cross - they were all there. I don't think we would have been able to gather such an audience if we had organized this workshop as a stand-alone event or linked it to a scientific conference. Since pretty much all of the Horizon2020 and Horizon Europe projects I've seen recently aim to reach out to policymakers (warms my heart!), whether on a European, regional, or even local level, I will leave here a piece of perhaps obvious advice: 👉 Go where your audience is. 👉 Time it when your topic is hot for them. 👉 Speak their language. And if you are not sure how to do that, reach out to some friendly science communications pros.

Does it have to be this way? The answer is that it doesn’t. Following the herd and doing things just as they have always been done will only get us to the same places we’ve been to before, rather like the quote attributed to Einstein "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." If we don’t want to go to those places, we have a choice about starting from a different place or deliberately changing course or direction along the way, or to swim against the tide. This is what Connell Advisory is for, to help with finding new starting places for strategy, structure, organisational design, fundraising, stakeholder relationships or getting the most from scare resources. In these situations, we need a guide, one who sees the landscape differently, who sees paths we can’t and trip hazards we have missed.
