Language shapes our perception of the world.  Whenever possible, we should use inclusive and respectful terms that reflect historical truths and actions.  Instead of "under resourced" or "underdeveloped", I propose we start using "Divested Communities" when talking about rural and urban areas.  This is something I learned earlier this year from a faculty member in Connecticut. "Divested" means withdrawing resources or investment from communities.  It implies lack of support and opportunities, while "under resourced" or "underdeveloped" may blame the #community itself.  Referring to communities as "divested" puts the responsibility on society to address inequities and invest in all communities.  It urges all of us to reconsider our actions in perpetuating or fighting divestment, promoting a more inclusive and compassionate approach to community development.  Modifying the language can change how we understand challenges faced by communities.  It shows that these communities lack resources, not potential.  #Rural #Urban #Education #Inclusion #Equity #EducationalEquity #HigherEd #HigherEducation #CommunityCollege #Language

We’re back with the 6 Principles for Inclusive Community Engagement! Step 3 is about emphasizing lived experience. Lived experience refers to the firsthand knowledge gained through personal circumstances and identity. As we can never fully see the world through someone else’s lens, we prioritize including those with lived experience to shape the process of engagement. This commitment to 'nothing about us, without us' ensures that the voices of those most impacted are central to decision-making.

Isn't it annoying & illogical when every platforms & opportunity asks you for institutional engagement? I am not convinced at all with these requirements because, - Everyone doesn’t have this privilege and access to organization. It’s very political in terms of who has access to intuitions, information about institution, opportunities it creates and all power dynamic within organization. It works as gatekeeper that ends up limiting opportunities, exposure, and development of marginalized section of society -You're giving more power to institution than to individual to validate their expertise, experiences & authenticity. If association to org. is mandatory, people are most likely to get corrupt, misuse power to sustain that power. Trust me that we've fresh experience around it lol - & It limits to potentials of social justice movement, activists and interventions as well.

No one can wear the shoe of an another but we can be present in the moment to respect, value and cherish all who bring something to the table provided that we remain authentic to our own being. Throughout my life, I have aimed for milestones and goals so high that people would tell me to "reach for the stars". What learning from everyone around me has taught me is that I do not want to reach for the stars - I rather want to be part of the most awesome galaxy of stars - each one shining brightly and the brilliance of shine of belonging! With that, I have been part of Steering Committee of Carroll Citizens for Racial Equity (CCRE) for quite a few years. While we know that Carroll County in Maryland has a long way to go for a complete assurance of everyone knowing and believing that they belong, this grassroots organization is slowly and surely moving and inching towards the aura of galaxy of stars. Both as a citizen of Carroll County, a Steering Committee member of CCRE and a faculty of Carroll Community College, I am so pleased that we will offer our annual Conference this Friday, April 26th at Carroll Community College. It is an annual Conference that required months of planning and to see it coming to fruition yet again this year makes me believe in the "being" of the human being. Gov. Wes Moore and Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller administration stands on the principle of leaving no one behind. Truly how can we leave anyone behind when all must belong?
