The value of Community, Introspection and Hard Work! Is the summary of the incredible insights I gained today as I moderated a session under the The African Leadership Universitys Career Week 2024 themed : IGNITE YOUR CAREER. One important thing I and often other students overlook is that ones career progression is not a solo journey but instead, one where community is essential at every stage. This was one of the many points that the speakers emphasized in our discussion titled; Pursuing Passion in the Face of Reality. I have learnt so much but my greatest takeaways summarized are; 1. The world is full of numerous opportunities for growth and advancement but pursuing passion also has its fair share of challenges which can be overcome through Resilience. - Henry Duah , Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela, Ph.D 2. Starve Distractions! Sometimes, I myself think my day is so busy but in fact, how much of my time is being spent on none essential activities? - Elizabeth Ndinda , Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela, Ph.D 3. Build Skills and Have Strategic Extra Curriculars: It is simply not enough to be one dimensional as you try to pursue your purpose I.e. focusing solely on academic success. Branch out and build skills that you can leverage to increase the impact you want to make. - @Elizabeth Ndinda 4. Prioritize your personal wellbeing: as we strive to Do Hard things, remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup so take time to do what you need to do to be able to give the best of yourself. Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela, Ph.D 5. Celebrate Yourself! : In our quest to achieve excellence, remember to track your growth and congratulate yourself for the progress you've made thus far. Henry Duah It was such a pleasure and honor to interact with such seasoned professionals from the diverse fields of education, entrepreneurship, research and technology. If you would like to watch the recording, I have put the YouTube link below. https://lnkd.in/dY2bwMws And as always, You're on top and Your going Higher. - My name is Stacey Garwe and I am on a mission to increase access and attainability of work and study opportunities for Zimbabwe's youth.

MPH | MBA | Global Health Security | Technical Advisor @ GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS | Digital Surveillance | Project Management
I had a really early start in life, the right network, the right set of friends, the right mentors and all. In university days, i was already getting funded trips abroad, speaking engagements, leadership responsibilities amongst others and straight out of school I got a funded fellowship that set me out on a precise career path. Right after my national youth service, at 26 precisely i decided to settle down and build it all together with someone i loved, cared for and appreciated. It suddenly seemed like everything went from 1 to 0. It seemed like i lost myself in the process, opportunities were eluding me, visas were denied, everything seemed wrong at a time, my finances were nothing to write home about. It felt like I had lost me and I tried my hands on a few things, but they weren't working. I found myself struggling to accept that I didn't have value to offer. The only thing working for me at the time was the fact that I had a stable job. At a certain time during this phase, a friend I admired a lot, a younger colleague at pharmacy school reached out to me to express his well-meaning concerns about my path and how they had really higher expectations for me, I was worried and those words hit home. Were we making the right decisions, as the family was critical to any decision we had to make? Why was i feeling stuck despite trying to hard to not live the average life? What were our critical success factors? It was really unclear. But what did I do, with my wife's support and prayers, I started pushing myself forward a bit, I took up several courses, includint an MPH program and then the MBA program, realigned my circle, looked out for problems to solve and though we aren't there yet, we finally feel like we are making some kind of progress and adding real value to the world. #personal development is neither incidental or accidental but intentional #6years and forever to go #PersonalDevelopment #IntentionalGrowth #JourneyContinues"
