Something we at times aren’t great at as the audiology community is give a compelling enough reason why our patients significant other(s) should attend (as an absolute minimum) their full hearing test appointment (& confirm they are both attending). I just had my 35 year reunion of my audiology class. We were reflecting on all the changes that have occured over the time in our profession. When we started, audiologists were not allowed to sell hearing aids. To have a pecuniary interest in a health outcome was seen as a conflict of interest. Can you imagine an audiology practice today without hearing aids? Forbes magazine once listed audiology as the best profession to get into. Someone asked if we were happy with our choice of profession. 100% said yes. Audiology had been good to us. When asked if we would recommend becoming an audiologist now, 100% said no. Too dominated by manufactures and hearing aids. Many audiologists have objected to OTC's but perhaps they are the mirror that we need to see what is core to our profession and a good opportunity for a reset.

The below topic has been on my mind recently as there is no clear guidelines (unless Ive missed it). 👂🏻👂🏼 if you are facing a patient with hearing loss in one ear and profound hearing loss in the other? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the course of practice you take. 🤔 Which option would you choose and why? 1️⃣ Fit them with a BiCROS/CROS hearing aid. 2️⃣ Get your patient to explore Cochlear Implant option, and if they decide not to proceed after speaking to a surgeon and Cochlear specialised Audiologist, then fit CROS. 3️⃣ Fit only a hearing aid and explain that there is no solution for the other ear.
