The problem with employment in South Africa, (except for the economy) is that the prevalence of "temporary employment", rather than actual careers. Unless you've learned the skill to "make your money work for you" or you actually find yourself in a solid career, chances are you're in some form of "temporary employment". Temporary employment is what should be entry level jobs, but there's also cases where labour brokers have come into the fray to provide employment services indefinitely that companies can use to keep "leased" employees "temporary employed" for multiple years. Basically very much like an engagement that never transpires into a marriage. In the first instance there's little growth plus it keeps positions occupied that could provide valuable experience for school leavers or graduates. The 2nd instance leads to career stagnation for the sake of security. Yes, ultimately your future is up to you, but is it too much to ask that your investment in time and effort opens real opportunities for growth as well-(especially if you really hope to be part of a company's legacy and growth) ? How do we grow the economy if we don't allow growth for people in sectors where there is actual potential for growth and just provide easily revoked job security?

Unemployment is a serious issue in South Africa and there are many challenges our youth face that make it difficult to turn things around. A key challenge to be aware of, is the lack of career guidance. Not knowing what their options are, or where to start, youth struggle to develop drive and motivation to push forward and overcome other challenges they face. Unemployment in Kenya is a pressing issue, with many individuals seeking meaningful employment opportunities. Africaaa??? Most of the time, this is the first reaction that I (A #recruiter) get when I normally approach a person for a particular job opportunity in #Africa. With this reaction, the first thought that comes to our mind is "Will this person agree to #relocate to Africa?", followed by "Oh no! This reaction means I am going to lose another #goodcandidate". Instead of this, why can't we take it positively and think of the actual #facts that we can share with these people, which can help them get to know the real picture of Africa? We recruiters, should ourselves be convinced about the specific location before placing someone there, especially in #African countries. With over 13 million African graduates currently unemployed, one might assume they are actively seeking jobs. Sometimes, they may settle for any job to make ends meet, regardless of the pay. Others opt for part-time employment because it's the only available option. However, with nearly 70% of Africa’s population under 30 years old, representing a youthful and active workforce, Africa Skills Alliance recent research on "Enhancing Employability for Young African Graduates" is revealing some insightful results that may challenge our assumptions about job hunting among young graduates. Interestingly, our study suggests that over 77% of African graduates are submitting ONLY 1-5 job applications per week, averaging one application per day. This is concerning, especially considering the high number of unemployed youth actively seeking jobs. What could be some of the reasons for this? Perhaps there is less enthusiasm for job hunting due to the limited number of job opportunities available. What are your thoughts? Unemployment is an experience that many South Africans can relate to and share. While it does not make it necessarily good 😬 , it does offer an opportunity for people to either learn to "sell" themselves or diversify and transfer their skills into side projects while they wait for formal employment. 2024 wove itself into that for me. I have been participating in side projects and, I guess, the word got out that I am now getting more calls and requests to collaborate. While this has not equated to more 💵 it has done plenty for my experience and exposure. Which has got me thinking... *Formal employment vs informal employment* 1. What are the pros and cons? 2.
