It's on again! Renew's Sustainable House Day will be held Sunday May 4th 2025, and this year will have a focus on retrofits for energy efficiency and electrification. If you have a home that you have made efficient and electrified, please consider signing up to show people in your local community what you did, and how you did it. Peer to peer learning is a powerful thing - seeing, touching and hearing how things work from someone you trust can reduce obstacles and concerns for people, and when we see our neighbours do things, we are inspired to do them also. Making your life more sustainable also reminds you that a more environmentally-progressive political agenda is also possible, and connects you to others of like-mind, because we haven't got time to fix this problem one house at a time - we need policies, programmes and funding. The Interlace - A Vertical Village of Living and Social Spaces, Integrated with the Natural Environment The Interlace represents a radical reinterpretation of contemporary urban living through its innovative design by Ole Scheeren. Departing from traditional isolated tower clusters, this vertical village stacks 31 six-story apartment blocks in a hexagonal arrangement around eight generous courtyards. The design emphasizes horizontal connectivity and community, creating a dramatic topography of terraced gardens and interconnected spaces that foster a strong sense of togetherness while integrating individual privacy. Completed in late 2013, The Interlace spans 170,000m² and offers 1,040 residential units of varying sizes. The hexagonal arrangement of blocks forms a stepped geometry with multi-story openings that allow natural light and air to permeate the courtyards. Each of the eight courtyards has its own distinct character and serves as a central point of orientation, with a primary pedestrian route connecting residents to these communal spaces. Sustainability is a key feature, with extensive roof gardens and landscaped terraces contributing to a 112% green area. The design incorporates passive energy strategies and environmental analysis, earning accolades such as the Universal Design Mark Platinum Award and Green Mark Gold PLUS Award. The project’s efficient use of space and natural elements, along with its focus on community and environmental integration, underscores its contribution to urban sustainability and social cohesion.
