Since my childhood, I’ve looked forward to the Olympics every 4 years. The achievements, sportsmanship, dedication, the history of the current games and their association with the ancient games are fascinating and a true joy to watch. However, the seeming lack of value of the Silver and Bronze medals has always bothered me. The Medal table order is only based on the number of Gold medals.
For example, were it not for the last-day Gold from the USA that brought the number of Gold on par with China. Based on the current calculation method, China would have won the games despite the USA having a staggering 28% more medals!
Therefore, with a bit more Excel and Editing skills in my pocket, I took it upon myself to work out the (true ranking). Hereby, I present you the top 25. Whereby Gold is calculated at a value of 1, Silver at a value of 66.66%, and Bronze at 33.33%. With that, we are presented with a rather interesting new perspective on the medal table. Only 4 stay in their current spot. 11 going up and another 9 going down one or more places. With some of the lower rankings having very significant jumps.
What do you think is this a fair way of looking at the table?
