It's #NationalInternDay! 🌟 "If I had a nickel for every time I was a Disney Intern, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's #awesome that it happened twice." (Dr. Doofenshmirtz) #DisneyInterns As an intern on her second internship with The Walt Disney Company, I thought I would share a few things I've learned here (A la R.E.M song titles): 🔆 "Shiny Happy People" - Your attitude can make or break your first step into the corporate world! You don't have to be the embodiment of joy every day, but you should always show up with the best version of yourself (that you can muster). 🛌 "(All I Have to Do Is) Dream" - Keeping your "why," your dream, alive is essential for success during an internship. If you know why you're there and where you want to go, you can tailor the experience to suit your goals! Your future self will thank you when you have experiences and scenarios to share with recruiters. 📚 "I Wanted to Be Wrong" - Mistakes are integral to learning. You should make a lot of them while you're picking up new skills, entering the workforce, and learning from the best and the brightest. If you're not making mistakes, you're either A) omnipotent or B) Bob Iger himself (and I'm sure even he made mistakes in the beginning). 🌒 "Man on the Moon" - If you believe they put a man on the moon... you can believe in yourself! It's easy to get caught up in the "Why me?" and "How did I get here?" but what you should focus on is that you did get here, and you are here for a reason! 🤝 "Me, Marlon Brando, Marlon Brando and I" - Network, network, network! Did I mention "network" already? I'm not saying to schedule an excessive amount of formal coffee chats—formal networking should be intentional to be respectful of everyone's time. I'm suggesting that building those daily working relationships really makes a difference—it's the little things! 👑 "That Someone Is You" - Be yourself! Be unashamedly, unabashedly, endearingly, audaciously you. You will feel most fulfilled when you are who you are and you're not pretending to be something you're not. Professionalism is key, but personality and professionalism are not mutually exclusive—they can both be a part of your wonderful self. Those are just some key things I've learned in my seven months with The Walt Disney Company. Here's to the next couple of months! ✅

Take initiative, ask questions, and explore every corner of the office (just maybe avoid the annex).🕵️ 3. Build Relationships: Channel your inner Jim and Pam. Make connections, share laughs, and maybe even pull off a prank or two—just make sure HR is on board.🤝 4. Seek Feedback and Learn: Think of feedback like one of Michael's 'That's what she said' jokes—awkward at first, but ultimately valuable. Embrace it, learn from it, and grow.📈 5. Stay Flexible and Adapt: Remember, it's not always smooth sailing in the corporate world. Be ready to pivot, adapt, and maybe even break out your best 'Jim face' when things get a little crazy.😬 So, buckle up, interns! It's going to be a wild ride, but with a little humour and a lot of heart, you'll come out on top. Don’t feel the need to brag to others about anything at events/meetings. Ask them about their experiences instead! You’ll learn what to do next, and they’ll like you more for taking interest in their career/life. THE REALITY OF BEING AN INTERN 🤫 Let’s talk about the reality of being an intern. More often than not, you'll find yourself juggling different roles, moving between departments, and picking up tasks that may feel overwhelming. It might seem like you're being overworked or spread too thin, but the truth is, it’s all about how you choose to see it. Instead of thinking, “I’m being overused,” think of it as “I’m gaining experience and learning skills from every direction.” Every task, no matter how small, is an opportunity to grow. Whether you’re asked to assist in a meeting, help with research, or manage a project, even cleaning a work space, each responsibility adds to your skill set one way or the other. This is your chance to showcase how adaptable you are, how quickly you can learn, and how dedicated you are to getting the job done. Employers notice these qualities, and they speak volumes about your work ethic. But remember, there’s a limit to everything. You shouldn’t take on tasks that you genuinely can’t manage. Being able to communicate your boundaries is just as important as accepting new challenges. Today, January 5, was the initial end date of my Summer/Fall internship on the Executive Communications team at Disneyland Resort… however, I’m thrilled to announce I have been extended through June! The past 7 months have been nothing short of amazing. To my fellow interns and early career professionals Caitlin Finerty, Gabe Valenzuela, Sarah Runyan, Madison Young, Serenity Andreasen, Meghan Mortensen, Juan Manuel Lugo, Jr. and Hannah Torres, thank you for your endless support and friendship. I’d especially like to thank to my incredible leaders Matt Nixon and Roxanne Robert for entrusting me with this extremely humbling opportunity and for granting me this extension. I would not trade this experience for the world. Thank you for everything you have taught me and for helping me to turbocharge my career. I could go on and on about every new skill I have learned and every project I have worked on, but I wanted to share something a bit different. During my professional internship, I learned from an executive the power of the alphabet, something so simple we mastered at such a young age. While working at #Disney, I have paid attention to even the simplest of learnings (just like the alphabet). To reflect on how I have been able to make my internship a successful experience, here are 7 verbs that are representative of my #DisneyIntern journey and of any career. June: Jump-start The verb jump-start means to give an added impetus (the force that makes something happen). So don’t be afraid to pitch that idea! Brainstorm. Find inspiration. Gather information. Ask questions! The best product always comes from having a clear path. July: Jubilate Find the JOY in every project you touch and every new encounter you face. Your passion and excitement WILL show! August: Adapt Coming into this internship, I had to adjust to new conditions. Working full-time at a corporate-style environment was entirely new to me, but by willingly adapting to the environment around me, I set myself up for success. Don’t steer away from change. Own it! September: Smile A smile and a positive attitude can take you anywhere in life and lead to new connections. Be a magnetic force and attract those around you. October: Optimize With high expectations at a reputable company like Disney comes optimization. ALWAYS do your best work and aim for perfection, even when you feel like you’re falling short. November: Network Get to know the people who work around you and within your company. Focus on learning about what your peers do and EXPLORE what interests you. Networking is all about connection — it goes way beyond looking for a job! December: Dazzle Discover what makes you SHINE and make it known to others. In 2024, find what ignites your spark or ways to make yourself shine even brighter. I was fired after 1 month! I used to be the queen of chaos - really disorganized, misplacing notes, missing deadlines, writing notes for meetings and events everywhere with no system. My disorganized ways finally caught up with me while I was doing a paid internship that I really valued for its flexible schedule and opportunities to gain new knowledge. During one particular week, I failed to keep track of some crucial matters, and my boss - who genuinely wanted me to grow and improve had no choice but to temporarily terminate my internship. I was mad at first, but after moping around for 3 days, it hit me hard. This was a massive wake-up call that I needed to get organized. That's when I started using productivity tools like Trello for task management, Google Calendar for scheduling, and Evernote for taking structured digital notes. I messaged my boss, but it took 4 days to hear back: "Message me after 2 weeks."🙆 Devastated, I realized I had to make this right. Just 2 days later, I sent a sincere apology, owning up to my disorganization problem. I'm forever grateful that my boss gave me another chance! That heartfelt apology saved my internship. I completed the full 3 months, impressing them enough to get a 5-month full-time role after. It was a tough lesson to learn, but it stuck - I'm a organizational machine now, never missing a detail.
