After more than 20 years as a military aviator and nearly 13 years in corporate America, I've reached a key conclusion:
The strength that drives the world-dominant US military—its mid-level, company-grade officers and NCOs—is precisely the weakness of many corporations.
As a fighter pilot, I was trained, equipped, and empowered to make split-second, life-or-death decisions with a $50 million weapon strapped to my back. Then, as a manager in corporate America, things were much different.
Having lived in both worlds, I know that the lessons of military team leadership can be applied to creating high-performance teams in the corporate environment. I know because I did it, having led the team that won the $3 Billion US Special Operations Command Armed Overwatch Program. We did things differently…and we WON.
