Superintendent, Dr. Errick Greene recognized the Soul City Cycling Club at the July 16, board meeting. 🚴 The club was established in August 2021 and honors Marshall "Major" Taylor, the second black world champion athlete for winning the world One-mile championship in Montreal. Its mission is to promote good health through cycling while fostering diversity, unity, and mutual support among cyclists within our communities. Mr. Arrie Williams, president of the Soul City Cycling Club, along with board members, presented 16 copies of the award winning book "Major Taylor: World Cycling Champion" to JPS school libraries. The Soul City Cycling Club hopes the book will enlighten scholars about Major Taylor's journey as an African - American cyclist, and get them involved in cycling.

New data from PeopleForBikes finds that England is lagging behind Europe for how cycling-friendly its towns and cities are. England received an average city score of 59 out of 100, compared with an average European city score of 71 when England is excluded. “The uptake of cycling in cities is directly connected to government priorities. When government leaders invest in making cycling more accessible and appealing, more people choose cycling for everyday transportation,” PeopleForBikes President and CEO Jenn Dice told Zag Daily. “If more cities in England make similar long-term commitments to invest in cycling, they will gradually catch up to their European peers.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e7ttCK9p

My wish for Luxembourg's Journalists at RTLToday, RTL Lëtzebuerg, Luxemburger Wort, Virgule.lu, Luxembourg Times, Editions d'Lëtzebuerger Land and ______: Kindly ask Council-leaders, Mayors, the Chambre des Députés + Prime Minister Luc Frieden's government & stakeholders when...in 2024...they will adopt the NGO BYCS's common-sense AND looooong overdue International Children's Cycling manifesto https://lnkd.in/gEQnAYpp The BYCS wisely states in its four points: (1) Make cities for children: Children make up 1/3 of the global urban population, and are among the most vulnerable. When cities are safer for children, they are safer for all. (2) Make cities with children: Children have unique perspectives in our cities. They can see both barriers and solutions to healthy and happy urban lives that adults can't. (3) Make cycling for children: When barriers are lifted, cycling provides diverse benefits for children, including independence, health, happiness, and community integration. and (4) Make cycling with children: Empowering children to become their own cycling champions builds a natural love of cycling, and ensures their urban movement needs are met. - - - - Further context: Consider Denmark...that CONSISTENTLY rates Number 1...outclassing Luxembourg by too many places...on Highest Quality of Living: ‣ Social Progress Imperative's Index https://lnkd.in/gQtKxH-t and Denmark outclasses Luxembourg across many of the OECD - OCDE's Key Performance Indicators for Children's Education + Civic Engagement + Community: ‣ Luxembourg https//:https://lnkd.in/gW6WewHx ‣ Denmark https://lnkd.in/gqQXp7n3 Meanwhile: ‣ As Luxembourg Times Journalist Andréa Oldereide reports: Twice as many obese teenagers in 4 years...The number of obese teenagers in Luxembourg has MORE THAN doubled since 2018, with 12% of secondary students showing weight levels considered obese in 2021 and 2022 https://lnkd.in/eGfFsVMr - - -

Why is a development program in women’s cycling so important? Coming straight from junior ranks into the highest level of racing, makes it sometimes hard to keep the motivation for those young talents as just finishing a race is often the goal. Therefore drop-outs are more often than rare and this doesn’t contribute to the growth of women’s cycling. The range of toplevel riders will expand not that much as how it should grow. Racing with those youngsters in 1.2 and 2.2 level races, will let them compete with a realistic goal and not unlearning them how to win or to race for the win…. Don’t skip steps in development, keep those talents motivated, hungry for more and give them time to grow as an athlete but also as a person. For a sustainable growth of women’s cycling we have to build from the base. That is the only way to create a solid house. When you build a house you don’t start with the roof either. When you decide to invest in the roof, make sure the walls and the base can bear it. Development takes time. Don’t rush and take the risk that the walls break and the roof will come down. You can start over again than…. #unlockyourpotential #developmentfirst #womenscycling
