Reed.co.uk July Job Market Overview: The number of jobs posted on Reed.co.uk in July increased by +13% month-on-month (MoM), showing potential early signs of increased confidence in the market. Jobs posted were down by -10% year-on-year (YoY). The only sectors to see YoY increases were: Sales: +31% YoY Transport & Logistics: +7% YoY Education: +5% YoY Hospitality & Catering: +3% YoY Applications were up +4% MoM and +21% YoY in July The majority of regions across the UK saw YoY and MoM growth in applications. The East Midlands and Northern Ireland both saw MoM dips by -6% and -7% respectively. However, this marked a 14% dip compared to January, hinting at a slight hiring slowdown across all regions. Applications Surge: While job postings took a breather, applications were on the move! We witnessed a 20% YoY surge in candidates eagerly exploring new horizons. Financial Services, IT, Administration, and Legal sectors led the charge, with impressive growth rates. Regional Highlights: • London: A bustling hub of opportunity, London saw a 28% YoY application spike. The city’s allure remains undiminished. • Southeast England: With a robust 26% YoY application growth, the Southeast continues to beckon talent. • East Anglia: This charming region experienced a 20% YoY surge in applications, proving that it’s more than just picturesque landscapes. Industry Buzz: • Pay Deals and Inflation: A Bank of England policymaker stirred the pot, urging British workers to consider lower pay deals as a weapon against inflation. Tough choices lie ahead. • Flexible Work Denied: Shockingly, a UNISON survey revealed that 30% of women in public services faced rejection when requesting flexible work arrangements, despite new legislation. • Low-Paid Jobs: Alas, the UK grapples with a surge in low-paid roles. One in eight jobs now falls below the ‘real’ Living Wage. After almost a decade in recruitment, I cannot count the amount of times a candidate has cited that they’re accepting elsewhere “because of a higher basic salary” only for them to appear on the job boards with their tail between their legs 3 months later 🤡 I’m not negating the fact that a basic needs to be fair and reasonable but surely if you’re more interested in an extra £2k on a basic salary, for example, with a company offering 15% commission as opposed to a company offering 20% commission, perhaps it’s worth considering if recruitment is right for you in the first instance. Let’s do the maths - 👉🏼 £24k salary + £20k billing month @ 20% commission = £2k salary + £4k commission = £6k take home 👉🏼 £26k salary + £20k billing month @ 15% commission = £2166 salary + £3k commission = £5166 take home 👉🏼 £28k salary + £20k billing month @ 15% commission = £2333 salary + £3k commission = £5333 take home Over the course of a year - 👉🏼 £6k x 12 = £72k take home 👉🏼 £5333 x 12 = £63,996 take home Suddenly a very slightly higher basic salary doesn’t look quite as appealing! January’s job market overview 175,173 jobs were posted on Reed.co.uk in January, up 40% compared to December Job applications surged by 66% MoM with a notable 29% YoY increase. Major spikes were observed in Marketing & Media (93%), HR (82%), Legal (81%), and IT (80%) MoM The regions with the highest MoM application growth were London (77%), East Anglia (67%), Northern Ireland (66%), and the South East of England (66%)
