Sag Moraine Partnership Alert: Prairie Tour and Restoration Effort at Shooting Star Prairie in Bridgeview The Village of Bridgeview Village of Bridgeview, Township of Lyons’ Clerk’s Office, Sag Moraine Native Plant Community, and Tallgrass Associates are embarking on an exciting project to restore a hidden gem that is often overlooked in Bridgeview! Bridgeview’s Shooting Star Prairie is located on Harlem Avenue and 76th Street and is 12 acres of remnant and restored prairie. There will be a tour of the Shooting Star Prairie on Friday, June 14th from 10am-11:30am with a meeting spot in the Shark’s parking lot, weather permitting. The Shooting Star Prairie is home to many rare species of native plants, moths, crayfish, and more. The Shooting Star Prairie is a historically significant location, and a hopeful example of how focused ecological management does work to improve species diversity even when surrounded by commercial land use! The Village of Bridgeview, Township of Lyons Clerk’s Office, Sag Moraine Native Plant Community, and the Tallgrass Associates have formed a coalition of interested individuals and organizations to assist in the restoration and development of this local historical treasure. Our five- year plan includes the removal of invasive species, building of decks and seating, creating walking paths, addition of more visitor parking, and construction of educational signage. The goal is to make Shooting Star Prairie an accessible nature preserve that hosts educational opportunities, scientific research, and a place where residents can submerse themselves in a beautiful piece of Illinois history. In addition to the tour on June 14th, there will be a Clean-Up-The-Prairie Day on Friday, June 21st from 10am-12pm, weather permitting, and an Invasive-Species-Removal Day on Friday, June 28th from 10am to 12pm, weather permitting. Recent clearcut proposals from Pacific Woodtech and Stella Jones threaten a combined 608 hectares of endangered mountain caribou habitat and old growth forest in B.C.’s interior. Almost all of the proposed clearcuts overlap with core habitat for the Columbia North herd, which is the only one of B.C.s southernmost herds with a shot at a long-term future. Seven other herds in this region have been declared locally extinct in the last two decades, due mostly to habitat destruction and fragmentation from logging. Last year, more than 400 of you sent letters and helped defer more proposed clearcuts in the Columbia North herd’s range. These animals need your help again. A Land Back Win for the Yurok Tribe The Yurok Tribe recently achieved a significant milestone in land management. In an unprecedented move, they entered into an innovative agreement where a U.S. national park will be co-managed by a Native nation. Here are the key details: Location: The historic agreement was signed at a property known as ‘O Rew, located in Orick, California. This area serves as the southern gateway to the Redwood National and State Parks and holds cultural and historical significance for the Yurok Tribe. Land Restoration: The Yurok Tribe, along with organizations such as Save the Redwoods League, has been actively working to restore Prairie Creek at ‘O Rew. Their efforts have created critical habitat for juvenile salmon and steelhead, which are already returning to the creek. Historical Context: ‘O Rew was once the center of the Yurok Tribe’s ancestral homelands. However, during colonization, the land was seized by colonial settlers in the mid-1800s. Later, a lumber mill operated on the site. Now, efforts to heal the land and restore its ecological balance are underway. First-of-Its-Kind Arrangement: This agreement marks the first time in U.S. history that a national park will be co-stewarded by a Native nation. The Yurok Tribe’s involvement in managing this land strengthens the relationship between tribes and the National Park Service. “Preservation takes time” is a common refrain among people who work to save old buildings. The sentiment is especially true of properties on Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list, which often face outsized financial and restoration challenges that require creative solutions, strategic partnerships, and significant investments of time and money. In 2023, we saw encouraging progress signaling a safer future for several 10 Most Endangered landmarks, including sites in Bedford, Columbus, Lawrenceburg, Gary, and Delphi. In about two weeks, Penny L. Heiple and I will travel through parts of West Texas, Kansas, and Colorado with Will M. exploring how we can help #RegenerateTheOgallala -- one of the largest and most important groundwater systems on Earth. This is a region known for wide open spaces and large-scale industrial agriculture. Two hundred years ago it was an incredibly rich grassland savannah with millions of buffalo and several indigenous tribes who knew how to live in harmony with the land. How do we imagine the regeneration of something so large? What kinds of breakdown and collapse will be required from the unsustainable culture that is depleting this aquifer? Who is going to do the cultural restoration and landscape regeneration work in the coming centuries? We will explore these questions and more as we travel to sacred sites and feel the land with our own hands. Onward, fellow humans.

In the book of Deuteronomy. There's a clear message about the importance of protecting natural resources. It tells us that even in times of war, it's forbidden to destroy trees just to cut off an enemy's food supply. This principle goes even further in times of peace. Emphasizing that we shouldn't harm our natural environment without good reason. This teaches us to value and preserve nature. Allowing us to witness the wonders of G-d's creation in its pure form. Each nature reserve, with its unique beauty and purpose, highlights the importance of keeping some places untouched by development. In places like the Florida coast, where beach preservation is crucial, maintaining areas without excessive development allows us to enjoy the serene beauty of beaches as they were meant to be seen. While this might not appeal to everyone. For those seeking tranquility and a chance to appreciate nature in its original state, it's truly special. These live oaks have been well-preserved in a new apartment community, and we've been checking in on them as part of our construction monitoring service. Urban trees play an important role in reducing the "heat island" effect, decreasing energy demand, decreasing stormwater runoff, providing wildlife habitats, and increasing property value.
