"Airlines are actively collaborating with manufacturers to test and implement the latest wingtip technologies, which have the potential to yield even greater fuel efficiency gains in the years ahead. "Airline fuel efficiency has improved by 39% per passenger-kilometer between 2005 and 2019, driven by the need to reduce costs and growing environmental concerns. NASA estimates that wingtips save aviation companies billions of dollars every year through improved fuel efficiency. Advanced winglet technologies, such as those developed by Tamarack, can provide further fuel savings of up to 33%." https://lnkd.in/gFraBBVT

What's next for Starship? Flight test 5 impressed us when the returning booster was caught by the "chopsticks" at the launch site. But what was learned, and what is coming in future testing? Thermal Protection System (TPS) improvements worked. The "chopsticks" worked. The control system and GNC (Guidance, Navigation and Control) in general was outstanding. There was minor damage in some areas, and there was almost an aborted booster recovery because of a parameter misconfiguration. Future tests will address the damage and configuration issues. One big item is restarting the Starship engines in space. Then, future tests in Low Earth Orbit can commence, including propellant transfer in orbit, as needed for trips to the Moon and beyond. At some point, the hot staging ring will be incorporated into the booster, requiring testing. Payload is still unknown, and subject to constant improvements, including the upgrade to Raptor 3 engines, and the increased rocket height. At some point, SpaceX will try catching the second stage at the launch site, reflying a booster, and reflying a second stage. Also, launch from Florida. How propellants will be managed in space for long duration missions or propellant storage remains to be demonstrated. SpaceX has to land a Starship on the Moon to satisfy its contract with NASA for the "Human Landing System" (HLS) that will take astronauts down to the Moon and return them to lunar orbit. https://lnkd.in/g5xFtuYf (YouTube video, 18 minutes) #Starship #FlightTest5 #SpaceX

Witnessing Vortex Flow in Action On a recent flight, I was captivated by a rare and mesmerizing sight—a visible vortex flow swirling gracefully off the wing’s leading-edge deflectors. As the plane began its descent, the humid, cloud-laden air revealed this aerodynamic marvel. The low pressure at altitude, combined with water vapor condensing in the wake of the deflectors, created a stunning hollow cone of swirling mist. This phenomenon, typically hidden in the invisible currents of air, came alive, illustrating the delicate balance of lift and drag during landing. Sometimes, even in the most routine moments, the sky reminds us of the incredible science shaping our journeys. #AerospaceEngineering #FluidDynamics #VortexFlow #Aerodynamics #FlightPhysics #EngineeringMarvels #AirplaneWings #AviationLovers #WingDesign #EngineeringArtistry #AviationPhotography #FlightScience #CloudPhysics #AirflowDynamics #ScienceInEverydayLife #AviationInspiration #PhysicsInAction #AircraftDesign #AviationCommunity #STEM

On Goanna's second flight, we’re excited to share the success of our CAS airbrake system. The data shows a change in the rocket's altitude gradient upon actuation, confirming a controlled decrease in altitude and showcasing the system’s overall functionality. Metrics like deceleration and velocity also align with the expected performance of CAS. Implementing this was no small feat, and we want to congratulate the team on their outstanding success. #UTSRocketry #UTS #UTSFEIT #Level3Certified #RocketryAchievement #Engineering, #STEM, #Innovation, #EngineeringExcellence, #EngineeringDesign, #MechanicalEngineering, #ElectricalEngineering, #SoftwareEngineering, #EngineeringTechnology, and #EngineeringLeadership. #Rocketry, #RocketScience, #SpaceExploration, #Propulsion, #RocketEngineering, #SpaceTech, #RocketDesign, #ModelRocketry, #Aerospace, #AerospaceEngineering, #Aviation, #Space, #AerospaceTechnology, #SpaceIndustry, #AerospaceInnovation, #AerospaceSystems
