President and CEO; Alliance to End Plastic Waste

We’ve spent much of our time at COP28 in sessions that are all about innovative, impact and development financing. I applaud the pledges of funding to address the climate agenda, but we know that much more is needed not only for climate change, but also to address plastic pollution, biodiversity loss and many other areas. One critical challenge which needs to be addressed with investment is the lack of proper waste management systems, especially in the Global South. Billions of people have no choice but to bury, dump or openly burn their waste. What’s needed are integrated waste management solutions as they will not only reduce waste and pollution but protect the environment, create low-carbon pathways and make it possible to extract valuable material from waste. Why do we think it is so important? Because we’re proving it and you can learn about one of our most significant projects, called Bersih Indonesia. In phase 1, it will serve more than 1 million residents whose waste will go into a developed integrated waste management system.  To tackle the waste management challenge more swiftly, we need many more hands on deck, especially Multilateral Banks, the private sector, development partners and governments. We need more partners like Lombard Odier Investment Managers (https://lnkd.in/gCCzu5za) and institutions like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). We need them to work together with platforms and initiatives to develop solutions that will prevent the leakage into the environment of plastic waste and create a circular economy for plastics.  We develop the solutions and de-risk them and then we work with partners in replicating and scaling those solutions.  #endplasticwaste #collaboration #CatalysingImpact #circulareconomy

Dear Jacob, your contributions at COP28 have been invaluable. The Bersih Indonesia project is a prime example of how integrated waste management can drive environmental protection and a circular economy. As we at Interzero and ALBA Group Asia continue to champion these initiatives, your call for collaboration with entities like Multilateral Banks and the private sector is crucial. Together, we’re paving the way for a sustainable future and a world without waste. #endplasticwaste #CatalysingImpact
