🎿 Skiing Towards Success: How I Conquer Mountains Both On and Off the Slopes 🚀 As I navigated the pristine, challenging slopes this weekend, it struck me: skiing is not just a sport; it's a metaphor for life and business. When I started The Company Athletes almost 5 years ago, I found a note on a "goodbye and success present": “Luyten, you love skiing. Start to ski off track in your new (business) life, that’s where you will find new routes and experiences”, so I did. Sometimes uncomfortable, but it helped me to learn and build new experiences in business and life. So, for 2024 I wish for everyone the experience of some “off-piste skiing" to explore the unexplored grounds for personal and professional growth ... and a great guide to support and elevate you! -> Focus on the what and where you want to grow, eliminate what doesn’t add to that -> Surround yourself with the people who will elevate this growing  -> Put yourself in circumstances which feel (slightly) uncomfortable  -> Enjoy it, you can learn from it and it can make you grow -> Looking forward to meet and hear your stories of personal and professional growth in 2024 -> If I can be of any help, love to support #leadership #personalgrowth #innovation #energy #connections

And I almost blew both my knees out at Aspen Gay Ski Week. 🫠 I had never skied in the Rockies before last week, and had little clue what to expect. Let’s talk leadership and skiing. Being a leader means that you need to lead yourself, too; that means doing things you’ve never done before: putting yourself in situations where the outcomes are challenging and unpredictable. Where is the line between skiing down and falling down the Rocky Mountains? Sometimes it’s a bit of both. Sometimes you’ve just got to do the thing before you feel ready. Other times, it’s important to recognize where support is needed. ***I 100% should have hired a ski instructor / coach.*** What’s something you know you could use support with? New challenge starts today! My partner in all things, Elizabeth Stevenson and I are teaching Alpine Skiing part time at Panorama Mountain Resort . We are joining a team of 70 professionals from all over the world and adding to our performance coaching repertoire. Just like leadership, you can’t fake skiing. And just like leadership, we can see the people who aren’t very proficient and are oblivious to that fact. What level leader are you? Are you a 1 or are you a 6? Overcoming fear happens in our professional and personal lives. So often we tell ourselves stories, play the what-if game, and procrastinate. Change is hard and scary. And yet, we forget about all the mastery of skill and hours of practice that will see us through to success. Recently, I once again faced this. A fast, steep black diamond is just over the edge. I have been skiing for years, mastered beyond the basics and yet I let my fear of the hill keep me away. But instead, I decided to go forward. I conquered it, successfully 4 times!! (Midwest skiing) It was all within my range of ability. The feeling was awesome! And I was reminded of the advice I give others. If you have the skills, practice and determination, then go forward. Options are limited for reaching the top of a mountain in winter. You can go to a resort and take the lift, you can climb it 🧗🏾♂️🥶, or…. You can take a helicopter up to a mountain all your own. If that sounds extreme, it is. It’s also a great way to test your ski skills and abilities. Recently I made a post about how growth requires us to get out of our comfort zone and a few people asked me what some examples of this look like. Of course, it’s a bit different in business but heli-skiing is a great example of getting out of your comfort zone! Maybe this seems a bit extreme. Or maybe not. We all need a little more adventure and excitement in our lives because it challenges us with new perspectives, something else that you hear me talking about a lot. Heli-skiing is certainly different than typical resort skiing. Sometimes, I just want to go fast and get from the top to the bottom the quickest way possible. No trees, no moguls, just getting to the bottom quickly and efficiently. We use a technique in the coaching work we do, called “Bottom lining”. It’s where we encourage clients who get caught up in unproductive narratives to “Bottom line” a response so they can learn to quickly communicate relevant information. Wendy L Fisher was a member of the U.S. National Ski Team and earned a spot on the 1992 Winter Olympic team in Albertville, France. She transitioned into big mountain skiing, becoming a two-time World Extreme Skiing Champion and one of the top skiers in the world.
