Kin-First: A Critical Approach to Child and Family Well-Being The kin-first approach is not just ideal; it is crucial to ensuring the well-being of children and their families. When children are placed in the care of individuals they already know and trust, such as extended family or close community members, it helps to minimize the emotional disruption they may experience during challenging transitions. Anything short of prioritizing kin risks exposing children to avoidable trauma, emotional distress, and long-term psychological harm. Social Policy Institute SDSU School of Social Work believes that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment, surrounded by people they consider family—whether related by blood or bonded through deep emotional connections. This continuity in care, culture, and community can provide the stability, security, and love that are fundamental to a child's development. The kin-first philosophy not only preserves familial bonds but also recognizes the invaluable role of a child’s existing support network in fostering resilience and a sense of belonging. For a child, these relationships are irreplaceable. When we fail to prioritize kinship placements, we risk severing these vital connections, causing unnecessary pain for the child and their broader family.

It is time for a change, 40-50% of foster youth age out of the system, 75% end up with a judicial run in/jail time, and 60% of all children trafficked are foster children. THIS IS A VERY BIG PROBLEM. By taking a care forward approach we can provide better outcomes for children in the system, we provide a navigator to the foster parents as a supportive tool increasing the amount of foster parents, we can help the agencies gain transparency and metrics of care so they can then gain more funding from the state for the important benefits and programs for their foster youth and save the United States government millions in allocated resources for intervention services. We are providing a comprehensive solution that helps everyone in the system so that we can focus on the most important aspect... the children!

The prevalence of dementia is estimated to be higher in Māori and Pacific Island ethnic groups compared to NZ European and Asian, though Māori and Pacific Island groups are likely underrepresented in the data for several reasons such as an absence of culturally appropriate tools for assessment. Let's breathe new life into how we care for our most vulnerable. #TimeForChange The care system protects countless children every year, but for many involved, it feels more like a barren landscape than a nurturing haven. While acknowledging the challenges staff, professionals, foster carers, and children face is crucial, I believe despair won't pave the way for progress. We need innovative solutions, not just dwelling on the damage. Like the image I saw recently - of a desolate coral reef slowly overtaken by new growth - we can nurture seeds of positive change within the care system. I know at times people become frustrated with my focus on the positive strides I see and the desire to drive forward creative solutions. For me we can’t get to regeneration without moving past the dispair of the damage done. We have to move beyond it, we have to seek solutions and nurture the tentative routes of change. Every chance we create conversation in this space we have the opportunity to find that possibilty and help it grow. I know those budding possibilities feel all to distant and far apart at times. But if we don’t seek out those chances we will fail to help them flourish. Focusing on the positive strides we can take isn't ignoring the problems; it's the fuel that drives creative solutions.
