How much does the US spend on Space Force? The United States Space Force (USSF), the first new military branch since 1947, was created to safeguard America’s interests in space amid evolving global threats. Established in 2019, Space Force’s mission includes protecting US military and economic assets in space and deterring aggression beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Since its inception, the Space Force’s budget has grown significantly. In 2020, $40 million was allocated to set up operations. By 2021, the funding had risen to $15.4 billion as the branch became fully operational. Fast forward to 2024, and the budget has nearly doubled to $26.3 billion, with a focus on research, development, and strengthening satellite defense systems. As reported by Theresa Hitchens this slide briefed by outgoing Secretary of the Air Force appears to show that the Space Force won't be a "mature" warfighting force till 2050!!?? This is totally ridiculous and can be moved up considerably if the next administration wants to and I hope they do. We have systems that can be repurposed in the near term while we work on weapons systems deployed in orbit. This includes both EW and ASATs that are ground based and even space to ground weapons. China has been engaging in, according to numerous public reports by DoD and ODNI, the most rapid buildup of warfighting space forces. This pretending we can kick the can down the road needs to stop! We either get a credible space deterrence and warfighting force ASAP, or we'll lose. It's that simple. Give the United States Space Force what they need to win!! Fun fact not mentioned in the article: 60% of the 16 EW squadrons available to the Space Force are National Guard. So if the current plan, now in NDAA language becomes law, all of these squadrons will cease to exist and all the trained personnel who have deployed with these systems for years and have supported these efforts mentioned in the article will be retrained into Air Force, not Space Force missions. That means the Space Force will have to find new people to operate the systems and train them.... oh wait....the Space Force is maxed out by law on how many people they can have in the service. Guard folks don't count against those Congressional mandates.... saving the service money and billets. This will take 10 years to replace according to recent studies. Given all that at stake, mentioned in the article...it's really not wise to ignore the Governors opposition to the end of Guard space units and create a gap in a mission area already too small for the requirements facing our nation in space.
