Paramount’s potentially up for sale Almost all family businesses have the same dynamic — the first generation starts a business, the second one takes it to astronomic heights, and the third sells it away, unable to save it. In media, we’ve seen it with Getty Oil. When Bill Rasmussen was searching for investments to launch ESPN, he turned to the oil tycoon George Getty. A pioneer in the field, George founded the Getty Oil Company along with his son, who managed to secure concessions in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (thus bringing the business to a whole new level). Looking to expand and invest some of its money, Getty Oil gave $10 million for an 85% share in the media company. https://lnkd.in/dRmaC5uJ ESPN quickly grew to become one of the most influential networks in sports, bringing in great ROI for Getty Oil. Then came Gordon Getty (the grandson aka third generation), and the family business was eventually sold to Texaco… along with the 85% ESPN stake. The thing about history is that it’s bound to repeat itself. This time, it’s Paramount — home to CBS, Viacom, MTV, Nickelodeon, and more. National Amusements (then Northeast Theater Corporation), which owns Paramount, was founded by Michael Redstone in 1936. The company started by building drive-in theaters. It was his son, Sumner Redstone, who turned National Amusements into one of the biggest media giants in the U.S. When Shari Redstone took over the reign of the conglomerate, she tried her best to keep it afloat, fighting off acquisition deals. She merged CBS and Viacom, but that didn’t help the struggling business much amid the declining cable viewer numbers, ad sales, and the streaming wars. The company’s income and shares both kept declining and there are no signs they’re going back up anytime soon. So, Shari is finally putting up the sale sign. https://lnkd.in/dad2vRpa That’s not to say that Paramount isn’t racking up money — the company has many robust assets that are bringing in cash. And people are willing to buy in. Right now, David Ellison is eyeing the acquisition, but only time will tell under which umbrella Paramount will go to. The strategy of using a strategy game as an activation. People who know me are aware of how I am always a sucker for great partnership ideas. And I was glad to see how SMG Studio and Warner Bros. Entertainment + Legendary Entertainment came together to have an integration for Dune II into one of my favorite strategy mobile games Risk. A simple idea executed so well utilizing features of the game like maps, houses, dices and frames. Brands who have been utilizing gaming as a medium of promotion have been seeing some fantastic results, and it's integrations like these lately have been a great way to motivate users to engage with the brands and even become their customers. The producers of Dune II have come up with some amazing activations to promote the movie, and no wonder people are flocking to the theatres to watch. And the best part? It's an amazing movie. There lies a tremendous opportunity available with in-game advertising and companies like AGN are at the forefront of it. Hit me up with a message if you want to know more. #brandpartnerships #ingameadvertising

We’re just three days away from the final — yes, we did say “final” — deadline for The One Show , ADC and TDC70. Yes, the Friday, March 1 date we announced all the way back in September is almost here, thus beginning the chaotic scramble for entrants to close out their entries and for our team to get those entries into the hands of our incredible jury. It’s enough to stress anybody out! Last year's Gold Pencil winner for moving image and craft came from Neverland/London. Ladbrokes, the UK’s oldest betting company. Transitioning into an entertainment brand, Ladbrokes aimed to engage a broader audience seeking immersive entertainment. By reimagining an iconic cinema moment - Rocky’s legendary run - with Ladbrokes’ sports and gaming personalities, they delivered a moment of pure enjoyment for players and fans alike. The epic film brought together galloping jockeys, flying dirt-bikes, and roaring F1 cars, captivating audiences with innovative storytelling. Seeing the growth and popularity of #anime in the U.S., I thought I'd repost a blog from the VOLTAKU vault (April 2021) that unpacks why #otaku (anime x gaming superfans) is such a key audience and why #hollywood has been so slow to embrace them. There are only a few genres that have built-in audiences large enough to build a business model around and scale it (i.e., think Disney and families or Blumhouse and horror). Otaku is one of them. https://lnkd.in/gD_b8tGm
