I am sure this was a vital discussion at a critical time. Addressing economic disparities and promoting democratic participation are essential for empowering Black communities and fostering sustainable progress. These conversations pave the way for actionable solutions that uplift marginalized voices, promote equity, and create meaningful opportunities for economic advancement.
Also, much can be learned by gaining access to or being part of this kind of discussion that can provide valuable knowledge or insights and can lead to deeper understanding or new perspectives on this subject.
Proud to know you were in attendance!
I help professionals turn their visions into reality and coach executive teams to strategically achieve their organizational and personal goals.
One of my favorite weeks of the year is attending the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Legislative Conference… understanding the connection between policy and how those initiatives are implemented in our communities is critical to knowing how to advocate and who to hold accountable for change. #ALC2024
The transition of Duke's Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship from a full-ride program exclusively for Black students to the broader Reginaldo Howard Leadership Program presents some advantages (as well as potential disadvantages).
Advantages:
(1) Inclusivity: By opening the leadership program to all students, Duke promotes inclusivity and fosters cross-cultural collaboration and understanding.
(2) Broader Reach: The new leadership program opens opportunities to more students, allowing a broader group to benefit from Duke’s resources and develop as leaders.
(3) Flexibility in Financial Aid: The funds will now support both the leadership program and need-based aid, helping more students who may struggle to afford Duke.
(4) Holistic Development: The leadership program promotes inclusivity by offering structured opportunities for personal and professional growth, equipping students with valuable leadership skills beyond just financial support.
The new Reginaldo Howard Leadership Program emphasizes inclusivity and leadership development, but there could be concerns about the diminished support and recognition for Black students (i.e., disadvantages).

Duke University ended its Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship, a full-ride program for Black students. This change comes in response to the Supreme Court's ruling against affirmative action. It marks a significant shift in how higher education institutions support underrepresented communities. The scholarship is being replaced with the Reginaldo Howard Leadership Program, which provides an intentionally designed series of engagement opportunities for students.
The program, which does not have a competitive selection process, is open to all students, regardless of race. The funds previously allocated to the scholarship will still be used to support current recipients. They will now also be used to fund the new leadership program and provide need-based financial aid.
This decision has sparked concern and disappointment among current recipients and alumni, who value the role this scholarship played in promoting Black academic excellence and leadership. The scholarship was essential for helping Black students who might not have otherwise had the chance to attend a prestigious institution like Duke.
While this move is disappointing, it’s crucial to understand that such decisions are often driven by legal changes rather than the institutions' preferences. Regardless of the reasons behind the decision, it’s important to recognize its broader impact: it can limit access to opportunities for prospective students and narrow opportunities for people from underrepresented communities.
This change underscores the ongoing need for all of us to step up with innovative solutions. It is necessary we increase inclusivity because institutions like Duke didn’t begin admitting Black students until 1963, 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This is why initiatives like Student Freedom Initiative (SFI), and their partnerships with organizations like Cisco and Fund II Foundation, are so crucial. SFI works to lessen the burden of student loan debt for students from these communities. This helps ensure they have the financial freedom to pursue their dreams without financial stress.
The work is far from over. We must continue to advocate for programs and policies that support the education and leadership of Black students to ensure the doors of opportunity remain open for all.
