I find that lots of people find "volunteering" intriguing in different ways. Whether its the opportunity to give back to the community, expand one's network or develop new skills. The word itself has been interpreted to mean different things to different people. My research focuses on individuals who contribute their time and skills within small and medium charities in the UK. So why volunteering? In the UK specifically, between 2020/21, 30% of individuals over 16 years old engaged in at least one voluntary activity through an organisation or group. Although, recent evidence suggests that interest in volunteering is declining, due to the impact of the pandemic on volunteers, lack of career advancement and satisfaction. Meaning that voluntary organisations may struggle to recruit volunteers, leading to burnout and posing significant challenges such as inability to fulfill their mission, serve their community and sustain themselves for the long term. This calls for a deep understanding of the experiences of volunteers and how the organisations they serve can provide better support and a more rewarding experience. Through my research, I hope to explore the multifaceted world of volunteering and its profound impact on individuals, communities and organisations. #Volunteering for non-profit organisations has changed my life! I would recommend it to anyone working in the corporate sector who is looking for greater #Purpose in their life, an outlet for their #CommunitySpirit and desire to help others less fortunate, or just an opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. If you’re at a crossroads in your life, becoming a #Volunteer for a cause or causes you care about may be just what you’re looking for. Finding a balance between paid and voluntary roles (and people and animal charities) has worked wonders for my #MentalHealth. It’s made me a better person, kinder to myself and those around me, and a better employee, more focussed, productive and loyal, to ensure I leave everything orderly for colleagues when I’m not in the office and still fully support those corporate targets that help pay the bills! I often call myself an accidental Executive Director which is kind of wild because this will be my 14th year in this very cool, challenging and exciting career. I never would have had this opportunity if I didn’t volunteer and have amazing mentors. So if you’re not feeling fulfilled by your job and/or you feel passionate about giving back to your community- let 2024 be your year to volunteer. Nonprofits need your expertise, talent and ideas! How do I volunteer? Explore social issues that are important to you. Research organizations that are doing meaningful work that you connect to. Reach out! Some organizations might have formal volunteer opportunities and others might have projects while some might need a little time to determine how to best utilize your expertise. There is no wrong way to volunteer because volunteering is good for your career, good for your soul, and good for your community. It’s a win-win-win! While corporate have mandatory hours for volunteering should not-for-profits restrict team members to volunteer ? As we navigate our careers, the concept of "moonlighting" in the corporate world often centers around seeking additional income. However, in the development sector, many motivated individuals choose to volunteer with other nonprofits to amplify their impact. This raises an important question: Should nonprofits restrict such behavior? Nonprofits are established to create positive change. As a changemaker, I believe that volunteering in multiple capacities should not be viewed as a hindrance but rather as a valuable contribution to the broader mission of social impact. In my previous professional role, I faced restrictions on my freedom to volunteer, leading to my decision to leave. I tried to explain that while some unwind at weekend parties, volunteering for causes is my way to relax and recharge. Volunteering not only expands my knowledge, skills, and network but also directly supports and enhances my work. Shouldn't we encourage this spirit of collaboration and continuous learning in the nonprofit sector? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
