FELC CAREER TALK On 13th December 2023, we had a Career Talk by our Faculty Education, Language and Communication (FELC) where they were three invited guests, Firdaus Affendi (Radio Personality Cats FM), Haris Zainuddin (TVS Account Manager) and Asyraf Hardy (PR Executive). This Talk has been organized under the faculty and under (PPD 1041 Soft Skills and Basic Volunteerism). This course mainly focuses on the crucial aspect of professional development, offering guidance and insights to navigate the ever-evolving job market. It involves exploring one's strengths, interests, and goals to make informed career choices. Networking, skill-building, and adaptability are emphasized as keys to success. The key highlights throughout the talk are Confidence and Being bold in doing anything, willing to accept the work with lots of love and passion and accepting that what we aim doesn’t mean it’s best for us. Education is important, need good grades, your skills can be learned, but your personality is the most important they want to you personally then your education, although education is important, but it’s the personality 1st and education 2nd.

TASK knows that access to education is critical to creating more economic opportunities for the people we serve. Founded in 1991, TASK’s education program has grown to provide a customized approach to address a wide variety of participants’ goals and needs. In 2024, the program helps students with everything from basic math skills to GED® preparation to ESL and more. “The program is designed to meet the needs of our community, which have changed as new technologies gain popularity and educational goals have evolved,” explained Calmia (Mia) Hart, Director of Education and Employment Programs. “A flexible and individualized approach is critical.” Bridging the digital divide and addressing the needs of Trenton’s growing Spanish-speaking population are top priorities for the program today. In addition to expanding access to educational opportunities, TASK is increasingly investing in its employment services to help people enter the workforce and improve their earning potential. TASK’s Workforce Development Coordinator Sean Ford and Employment Support Specialist Mary Uhlir provide free employment assistance as well as career readiness and life skills training to help TASK patrons achieve their goals. TASK’s Computer Resource Specialist Carolyn Burke runs digital literacy courses, provides one-on-one assistance and oversees TASK’s computer lab, aimed at helping patrons get online and navigate the digital landscape. By partnering with more than 40 local businesses to host hiring drives and resource fairs, the team connects patrons to job opportunities as well as one-on-one job search and retention support. This month, TASK will launch TASK’d to Work: A Soft Skills Series, a four-week course to help participants enhance their interpersonal skills, grow confidence and increase marketability. Says Hart, “The employment landscape has changed. By adding soft skills training and resource fairs ahead of the hiring drives, and strengthening our digital literacy program, we are positioning job seekers to be better prepared for meeting with employers and be successful in the workplace.” Pictured here: A jobseeker makes an application during a recent career fair.

The first post in 2024! For almost two months, I have been occupied with happiness. I hard to find time to write about it here. After two years of our program implementations, we have seen many fruits to harvest. These results made by hard efforts from all program operation teams. No red date in our calendar when we work in the field. That is the fact instead of a joke. We optimize our time to engage, reflect, collaborate, prepare, and strategize the coming plan. All things we do to reach our ambitions. And I see those efforts then paid of. The most exciting is youth component. The program did not just facilitate a job fair we also helped more than 25 vocational student graduates to get jobs in various sectors by increasing their employ-ability skills. In the future, the program wants to do more. The program will accelerate youth programs with SMK to align with potential support by local industries. Many options on 'the super link and match" will be taken. Youth and schools must be the key players in generating wellbeing in the region. Than this is a great work to anticipate demography booming in the future. I will share other stories from different thematic components next time.

Yesterday DeakinTALENT kicked off the first employer event of Employer Month featuring four early careers employers (Capgemini, CSL, GMHBA Limited and Worley) talking about Applying for Roles in Graduate and Vacationer roles. It was a ripper and I asked a question to our panellists that will hopefully be valuable to some of the students that I am connected with on Linkedin 😜 . Here it is – “Take yourself back to when you were studying, what is the one piece of advice you wish you were given?!” 😎 James Schlunke (Capgemini): Be more proactive in getting involved in clubs and societies to connect with employers early on and take advantage of university resources. 😎  Silvana Naumovski (CSL): Networking is crucial; talk to people in the industry to understand the landscape and align your motivations with career opportunities. 😎 Kerri Lawrence (GMHBA): Have more fun at university while also doing meaningful research on companies to find those that align with your values. 😎 Sarah Wilson (Worley): Utilise LinkedIn to research career paths and reach out to professionals for insights and guidance. 😎 Lior Aufgang (Capgemini): Trust the process and have faith that things will work out if you consistently put in the effort and follow good practices. 😎 Cameron Y. (CSL): Persevere through the job application process, continuously improve, and leverage your network for feedback and support. 😎 William Stajnko (GMHBA): Start applying for graduate programs early in your degree to familiarise yourself with the process and resources available. For what it’s worth the advice I’d give myself is to be aware of the key recruitment dates/times. From the beginning of your penultimate year, start applying for vac roles, from the beginning of your final year, start applying for grad roles!
