ICYMI: Winners of the Sustainable Packaging Innovation Awards were announced on stage by GreenBiz Group’s VP of Circularity, Jon Smieja, at #Circularity24 on May 22! ⭐The 2024 winner in the Compostability Category is Lifoam’s Bioffex® (a subsidiary of LifeMade Products LLC)⭐ Without compromising quality and performance people have come to expect from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Bioffex® technology was invented to improve cold-chain and protective packaging solutions while mitigating environmental impact. Bioffex® technology accomplishes this by lowering the product's lifecycle carbon footprint relative to EPS, through the reduction of fossil-based raw materials, resource efficiency in manufacturing, and fewer carbon emissions at end-of-life. Bioffex® is meant to serve as a replacement to EPS in cold chain and protective packaging where performance and sustainability are paramount. During manufacturing, Bioffex® technology has ~60% less Global Warming Potential than a similar EPS container. Depending on the design, shippers made with Bioffex® technology can be obtained for as little as a 25% premium compared to an EPS counterpart. The patented and patent-pending processes for making and molding bead foam through Bioffex® technology enables the production of the material through modified existing manufacturing assets and is comparable to EPS. Insulated shippers with Bioffex® technology provide a thermally insulative layer that protects packaged food with a comparable level of protection to EPS. Bioffex® technology, molded into insulated shipping containers already in commercial use has passed shock, drop, and vibration testing performed according to ISTA-6-FedEx-A. Their customers have shipped ~400k shipments in insulated shippers made with Bioffex® technology with continued positive response.
