A friendly reminder that telling marginalized people we all bleed red and that 'we're all children of God' does not take away from the discrimination we face. On a weekly basis, someone takes it upon themselves to remind me that we're all created equal. As if I didn't already know this. If I didn't think we were all equal, I wouldn't be advocating for equality, now would I? Just because we're all created equal doesn't mean we have the same experiences. Telling Black people all lives matter does not erase the reality of police brutality. Telling me that we both bleed red does not change the fact that I have to work twice as hard as a white man to get half the recognition. Imagine an unhoused veteran opens up to you about the discrimination he faces as a homeless person, and your only response was 'we all bleed red'. While true, it doesn't change what this man is experiencing. So at best, you're telling him the obvious. At worst, you blew him off. Marginalized folks do not need privileged identities telling them they're created equal. We aren't stupid. It's why we're advocating for equality in the first place.
