#ThoughtfulThursday: Medical Tourism Medical tourism has become increasingly popular over the past few decades as more people seek high-quality yet inexpensive medical treatments. A PIDS policy note revealed that although the country offers cheaper surgical procedures than its Asian rivals, Philippine medical tourism receives a tiny portion of the medical tourism market. In 2010, Thailand was the top destination, with 1.2 million medical tourists, followed by Singapore, India, and Malaysia, while the Philippines had yet to establish itself as a major player in this market. The increase in medical tourism in Asia has been driven by globalization, digitization, and other key factors, especially in South East Asia. Here are three significant highlights: - Globalization and Digitization Impact: The globalization of healthcare and digital technologies have revolutionized medical tourism, erasing borders for patients seeking high-tech medical care. The ease of obtaining medical visas has led to continuous growth in the world market, with Thailand and Malaysia opening borders to visa-free Chinese and Indian tourists. - Factors Driving Medical Tourism in Asia: The low cost of complex surgeries and skilled doctors make Asia an attractive destination for medical tourists. High-quality healthcare, international standards, easy visa acquisition, non-face-to-face care, insurance billing systems, language expertise, and accessibility are key in attracting international patients. - Value of Tourism to Seniors' Health: Tourism is vital for active aging, impacting seniors' physical and mental health. This recognition has implications for the rise in medical tourism in Asia, especially for seniors seeking healthcare and wellness experiences. #MedicalTourism #AsiaHealthcare #Globalization #Digitization #SeniorsHealth #PositiveAging #HealthcareDestination #SouthEastAsia #MedicalInnovation

𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 Boon or Bane? The Straits Times published a feature today on Penang as a medical hub 🟢 1 million Indonesians seek healthcare in Malaysia 🟢 50% of the revenue from medical travel is captured in one state #Penang 🟢 1 Penang hospital, Island Hospital Penang, dominates with 200,000 medical travelers in a year (Island Hospital was recently in the news for the upcoming acquisition by IHH Healthcare for an eye-watering MYR 3.9 billion or roughly USD 900 million) ✈️ Pertinent comments in the article also about taking an ecosystem approach and ensuring infrastructure like airports etc need to be grow in tandem. 🏥 No mention however of effects on healthcare affordability, accessibility and quality for the locals. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬 I recall the SingaporeMedicine initiative launched in 2003 by then-Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan which had the ambition of 1 million medical travelers by year 2012, creating 13,000 well-paying jobs for Singaporeans and increasing the sector’s contribution to GNP from 1 to 3%. Medical tourism presents both opportunities and challenges. The growth of Penang as a medical hub, attracting over 1 million Indonesians and significant foreign investments, is a testament to the region’s healthcare appeal. However, while this ecosystem approach benefits infrastructure like airports and hospitals, the article raises a critical question: how does this impact the affordability and accessibility of healthcare for local residents? It's essential (politically) to balance medical tourism's economic gains with maintaining quality healthcare for all. #MedicalTourism #HealthcareAccess #Penang #HealthEquity #GlobalHealth
