📣 Are you transporting seniors/wheelchair users? 📣 Commercial auto carriers in this space have been few and far between for years now, with appetite continuing to tighten, and with increasing loss control requirements. This means that it is also time to tighten up your controls in order to reduce risk of injury to your residents/clients and to ensure that your auto carrier views your account favorably at renewal. You do not want to find yourself without any good options here. 🙏 The largest auto claims I have seen in the last few years have been wheelchair tips. Tipping is the most common cause of wheelchair-related accidents and accounts for 80% of wheelchair-related injuries among people 65 or older. Even minor incidents can prove fatal to the elderly. Make sure you have a strong written procedure for wheelchair loading and transport that you can present to underwriting. Train all drivers and staff on these procedures, and then practice, observe, and assess frequently. Incentivize employees to be masters of wheelchair securement and safe transport procedures! Below are a few crucial components that should never be missed: ❗ Conduct pre and post trip checks on wheelchair lifts, straps, and tracks to quickly identify areas where equipment may be in need of repair or maintenance. ❗ Ensure there is adequate staff on hand to assist throughout the entire transport process. ❗ When loading or unloading passengers, choose a route that is flat, easily navigable, and free or debris. ❗ Make sure the lift is on level ground to avoid tipping. ❗ Before operating the lift, make sure that the wheelchair brakes are locked and the gate is securely closed. ❗ Secure wheelchairs to the floor with brakes locked, and ensure passengers are safely strapped in.
