Day 1 of 2024 Disaster & Emergency Management Conference kicked off with the #DEMC24 interactive panel including Des Hosie (Fire and Emergency NZ), Mona Curry (Hau'ula Community Association), James Hill (Energy Queensland), Wayne Snell (Australian Civil-Military Centre) & Kate Retzki (Office of the Inspector-General of Emergency Management); who discussed “Navigating Crisis: Learning, Innovating & Collaborating in Disaster & Emergency Management". Discussions explored challenges in disaster response, including recent natural disasters & innovations enhancing early warning systems. Procedural hurdles, defence involvement delays & the importance of technology for streamlined communication. 🚨 Opening Ceremony today for the Maritime Crisis Management Workshop in Antananarivo! 🌊 This week-long workshop aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of staff responsible for crisis management within national agencies contributing to State Action at Sea, with a special focus on crisis coordination centers. These centers are crucial within the national crisis management framework. Throughout the week, under the guidance of Fabrice TOLLARI and Samuel CHAMPON, we will: 🌊 Establish an Interministerial Centre for the Coordination of Maritime Operations (CICOM). 🌊 Develop Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) with input from all participants to improve and strengthen Madagascar's national maritime crisis management mechanism. 🌊 Create a culture of information sharing between participants. We are collaborating with the Center Interministériel de Coordination of Operations Maritimes (CICOM) and various other agencies, notably the Center Regional de Fusion d'Informations Maritimes, Ministry of Forces Armies (MFA), Ministry of Defense in charge of the Gendarmerie (MDG), Ministry of Public Security (MSP), Ministry of Transport and the Météorologie (MTTM), Ministry of Fishery and Bleue Economy (MPEB) , Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), Ministry of Public Health (MSP), Ministry of Finances(MEF), Ministry of Interior (MI), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), National Navy (EMMN) and Civil Protection Corps (CPC). I have just completed a comprehensive online course in Global Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) from the Humanitarian Leadership Academy - Kaya. DRRM is a vital field that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to mitigate the impact of disasters on communities. Through this course, I've gained valuable insights into understanding disaster risks, strengthening preparedness and response mechanisms, and promoting resilience-building initiatives at local and national levels. As we continue to face increasingly complex challenges posed by natural and man-made disasters, training in reducing and managing disaster risks is important!
