Who else is registered for the 2024 United States Space Force T-Minus 10 Miler event? In-person (timed at Patrick SFB on December 14) or virtual (anywhere you are and at your own speed during the month of December) it is a great way to make connections with the nation's newest military service. This year's featured rocket for the medal, patch and t-shirt is the Atlas. According to the event website at: runspaceforce.com: "The 3rd Annual Space Force T-Minus 10-Miler will feature the Atlas Rocket. The featured rocket will be portrayed on the event’s official race shirts, finisher medals, commemorative patches, and more throughout 2024. The mighty Atlas ICBM is legendary in the history of America’s space and missile programs. It began the Atlas family of rockets. The USAF developed it as America’s first ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) and one of the earliest liquid-fueled rockets in the 1950s! The Atlas quickly transformed into one of America’s most successful space launch vehicles. From 1957 into 2004, variants of the original Atlas launched hundreds of payloads into space, including our first astronauts into orbit! On Khaleej Mag, I recently wrote about the trend of space militarization and space wars in the light of recent events. "The Pentagon’s latest actions underscore this trend. With powers like China and Russia making tremendous advances in space-based operations, the United States is responding by creating extensive capabilities for potential space warfare. This entails deploying a new generation of ground and space-based technologies to protect American satellites and, if necessary, destroy enemy spacecraft" Global dialogue and space preservation are the way forward. (Yet Another #SpaceDebris Event) A #SpaceDebris-generating event has been reported by LeoLabs originating from the inactive Russian satellite RESURS P1 (US SATNO 39186, Int Des 2013-030A) Per LeoLabs, "a number of fragments were released" between 2024-06-26T13:05 UTC and 2024-06-27T00:51. (ref LeoLabs' post on X: https://lnkd.in/gYVzpkM7) ....and now the good news. The altitude is low, meaning the orbit lifetime of the debris should be rather short. ...and now the really good news. The altitude is even below that of all crewed missions: the International Space Station and Chinese Space Station (ref graphic - data courtesy of space-track.org). UPDATE: Event has also been reported by 18 SDS. Per space-track.org home page: "The 18th Space Defense Squadron (18 SDS) has confirmed the breakup of RESURS P1 (#39186, 2013-030A), which likely occurred June 26, 2024, between 1512-1640 UTC. As of June 26, 18 SDS is tracking 100+ associated pieces at an estimated 350 km altitude, which are being incorporated into routine conjunction assessment to support spaceflight safety. United Launch Alliance (ULA)'s Dream Chaser's Debut Delayed "We waited as long as possible on Dream Chaser because we really wanted to fly them," said Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA), indicating the difficult decision to prioritize national security launches over Dream Chaser's first flight. This delay means Sierra Space's Dream Chaser spaceplane won't launch this summer as planned, making way for crucial ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket missions for the U.S. Space Force by the end of 2024. While Sierra Space maintains Dream Chaser could be ready by year's end, ULA will focus on two critical Vulcan Centaur launches. The first, Cert-2, aims to certify the rocket for military use and is planned for no earlier than September. This follows the successful debut of Vulcan Centaur, which flawlessly deployed its payload despite a minor methane tank performance issue. Under-the-radar Firefly Aerospace, with a history of few launch attempts and only one fully successful mission, is expanding to a second launch site as it prepares to ramp up operations. Announced yesterday, Firefly chose the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at Wallops Flight Facility to launch its Alpha rockets in addition to its existing launch site at Vandenberg Space Force Base. This came as no surprise, as Firefly has already partnered with existing MARS user Northrop Grumman on the Antares 330 and Medium Launch Vehicle rockets. The bigger question is why Firefly is adding a second launch site for its Alpha when the rocket has launched so infrequently to date. And why MARS? Firefly's VICTUS NOX mission for the US Space Force in September 2023 demonstrated rapid response, a capability the US Department of Defense is nurturing to be able to launch a payload within 24 hours' notice. In order to launch quickly, Firefly needs flexibility in launch locations to meet orbital criteria and to avoid delays due to weather and launch logistics. MARS and Vandenberg give Firefly options on both US coasts, and MARS isn't as congested as the popular Cape Canaveral Spaceport. Firefly has many launches in its pipeline, including a new agreement with Lockheed Martin to launch 25 missions. In addition to its US Space Force customer and L3Harris' three flights, Firefly now has a significant backlog of Alpha missions to fly. Alpha is scheduled to launch again from Vandenberg as soon as 9:00 PM Pacific Time on Wednesday night. We wish the company success and it makes moves to become a true launch competitor.

Final Mission: Delta IV Heavy Rocket Set for Historic Launch with NROL-70 Payload. by Clarence Oxford - Los Angeles CA (SPX) The Space Systems Command (SSC) of the U.S. Space Force, in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and United Launch Alliance (ULA), has announced the scheduled launch of the NROL-70 mission. This event, set for no earlier than March 28, will mark the final flight of the Delta IV Heavy rocket.
