IT'S CO-OP AND INTERN SEASON IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY! In the next few weeks, firms are onboarding young engineering, surveying, architecture, science, and construction management students. Let's help these students realize what great opportunities there are in the construction industry and let's help each other's students out. Students: Take advantage of your time in the office and field and learn all you can. Talk to people in your own company outside the group you are working in. On the site, ask questions of the construction manager and their team, and take the opportunity to learn from the many great tradespeople this industry has. Sometimes the best lesson you can take away from an internship is what you DON'T want to do. Don't feel bad about it, but don't burn your bridges. The construction industry, while large, is simultaneously small. A positive attitude can go a long way, and your team leader can often introduce you to someone who may be able to get you a job in an area you ARE interested in. But if you don't show up to learn and be the best you can, your team leader is unlikely to offer an introduction. Stories about bad attitudes in the field can spread like wildfire and quickly earn you a reputation (deserved or undeserved). Full-time team members: Reach out to your co-ops and interns and let them know you are open to questions. Mentor your co-ops and interns- these are the folks who will someday join your firm - or will join a competitor or client- your attitude matters! Reach out to your clients and volunteer to talk to their co-ops and interns if they are interested in your area of expertise. Ask your clients to speak to your co-ops if their ultimate career aspiration is something other than what is available at your firm, and help your students plan for their next internship with a company that better aligns with their goals. Tyreef Bevel, Construction Management Executive at Turner Construction Company NY, provided an exceptional learning environment for our Youth Construct interns. Within this setting at The Spiral, Turner’s office skyscraper masterpiece, interns recall their experiences and the lessons learned. One prominent aspect highlighted is the challenges inherent in working within teams. These challenges include navigating multiple viewpoints, ideas, concerns, and considerations, often leading to conflicts and disagreements. It’s essential to outline concerns, prioritize outcomes, and establish a clear time framework for tasks and projects to address these challenges effectively. However, despite the challenges, the benefits of teamwork are undeniable. Shared or delegated responsibilities allow for more efficient task completion, as team members can divide tasks based on their strengths and expertise. Trust is an essential cornerstone of effective teamwork. However, verification and accountability are equally important. Through this class experience, Youth Construct interns gained valuable insights into the dynamics of teamwork, preparing themselves for the challenges and opportunities in their careers and lives! Two days ago, I witnessed the construction of temporary structures using wood, including: - Site offices - Workers' room - Store room It's impressive to see how wooden structures can be quickly assembled to support the construction process. Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. The debate is over! Interns who have great hands-on experiences like to tell everyone about it. In this video, Nolan, a WisDOT Civil Engineer and former intern, talks at a roundabout project on the State Highway 60 Roadway at Eagle Drive in Jackson, Wisconsin. It is just another day in the life of thousands of construction workers across the U.S. As a construction intern Nolan shared the value of watching something get built while being outside rather than sitting in the office all day. I love this quote: “Working this summer felt less of like a business and more of like a learning community. Everyone was willing to help me. Everyone was willing to teach me. I really enjoyed that and I felt like it would be a great way to spend the rest of my career.” He got to see different job sites and experience different things. He saw that as very valuable in assessing what he wanted to do with his future and chose WisDOT. Principles were most likely at the heart of the way the internship was constructed. So, add that to your punch list. I acknowledge WisDOT for designing a wonderful hands-on internship program and engineering this 2-minute video. They have cemented a positive impression on me and everyone who surveys their work. No need to go in circles in a roundabout. The debate is over. Hands-on experiences are valued by interns. P.S.
